Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra: The One-Footed Goat, and the Fire That Burns Two Ways

    Astro River Institute · Published 21 September 2026, 07:00 IST · 18 min read

Purva Bhadrapada (also called Poorattathi in Tamil, Poorvabhadra in Telugu, Pooruruttathi in Malayalam, also written Poorva Bhadrapada or Purvabhadra) — 20°00′ Aquarius to 3°20′ Pisces, in Aquarius and Pisces; lord Jupiter; deity Aja Ekapada. Lahiri sidereal.

Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra (also written Purvabhadra) is the twenty-fifth lunar mansion, from 20°00′ Aquarius to 3°20′ Pisces — the last of the nine that straddle two signs. Its deity is Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat, a form of Rudra and the pillar of fire that holds up the sky; its symbol is a two-faced man, or the front legs of a funeral cot; its lord is Jupiter. The name means "the former blessed feet", the first of the Bhadrapada pair, and the mansion is the fire that burns in two directions at once: the ascetic's heat that lifts and the fanatic's heat that destroys, the two faces that look toward heaven and toward the grave. A person with the Moon here is intense, idealistic, unconventional and capable of great sacrifice or great severity, the one whose fire has to be pointed — and whose lesson is which way.

The page walks Purva Bhadrapada through in full: the two-sign span, the four padas and the navamsa each reaches, the Moon and every other planet here, the sub-lords of the Krishnamurti method, the dasha a birth here begins, and the computed sky this Moon is under in 2026–27. Terms in Sanskrit are explained where they arise.

    The story and the symbol

Aja Ekapada is one of the strangest gods of the Vedic sky — the unborn one-footed one, a goat, or a goat-headed being, or a single column of fire rising from the earth to hold up the heavens. He is counted among the Rudras, the fierce gods of the storm, and the tradition reads him as the tapas of the world: the heat of austerity, the fire that a yogi builds by standing on one foot for a thousand years, the energy that lifts by burning. Purva Bhadrapada is his mansion, and the two-faced man is its symbol because the same fire that lifts the ascetic can, turned the other way, become cruelty, fanaticism, the sacrifice of others instead of the self. The front legs of the funeral cot are the other symbol: the mansion is the beginning of the end, the first half of the passage out — Uttara Bhadrapada holds the back legs, and the passage is complete.

Jupiter as lord gives the idealism. Jupiter is faith, meaning, the goal worth burning for; in Aja Ekapada's mansion it becomes the conviction that will sacrifice anything — the martyr's Jupiter, the reformer's, the ascetic's. Purva Bhadrapada natives are the tradition's idealists and its extremists, and the two are the same fire. Their shadow is the second face: the zeal that scorches, the principle held so hard it becomes a weapon.

The mansion straddles Aquarius and Pisces — Saturn's sign of the crowd and Jupiter's sign of the ocean — and the crossing is its story: the fire lit for society becoming the fire that dissolves the self. The tradition marks Purva Bhadrapada as ugra, fierce, and reads it as a mansion of transformation through heat.

Which rashi is Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra? (Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra rasi)

Purva Bhadrapada straddles two signs. Its first three padas are in Aquarius (Kumbha or Kumbh rashi), 20°00′ to 30°00′, and its fourth pada is in Pisces (Meena or Meen rashi), 0°00′ to 3°20′. So most Purva Bhadrapada Moons are Aquarius Moons — Saturn-ruled, airy, fixed, humanitarian, detached — with Jupiter as star-lord giving the detachment a faith and the humanitarianism a fire: this is the Purva Bhadrapada that burns for a cause. A Moon in the fourth pada is a Pisces Moon — Jupiter-ruled, watery, mutable, compassionate, dissolving — and here Jupiter rules both the sign and the star, which makes the fourth pada the mansion's most spiritual quarter and its most self-sacrificing. Jupiter and Saturn, the star-lord and the sign-lord of the Aquarius padas, are neutral to one another in the Parashari table, and the mansion's fire is disciplined by the sign; in the Pisces pada nothing disciplines it but the water.

The four padas of Purva Bhadrapada

Each pada is a quarter of the mansion, 3°20′, and carries the sign of the navamsa, the ninth division, in which the inner life and the marriage are read. Purva Bhadrapada's padas run Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and the fourth sits in a different sign from the other three.

    PadaDegreesNavamsaReading
120°00′ Aquarius – 23°20′ AquariusAriesAries navamsa, in Aquarius: the fighting fire — the reformer, the revolutionary, the ascetic who is also a warrior. The most forceful pada and the one where the second face is most likely: zeal turned to aggression.
223°20′ Aquarius – 26°40′ AquariusTaurusTaurus navamsa, in Aquarius: the building fire — the idealism given a foundation: the institution founded for a cause, the wealth used for the vision. The steadiest pada and the tradition's favourite for the mansion's gifts made practical.
326°40′ Aquarius – 0°00′ PiscesGeminiGemini navamsa, in Aquarius: the speaking fire — the preacher, the pamphleteer, the teacher of the cause. The most communicative pada and the one that spreads the flame.
40°00′ Pisces – 3°20′ PiscesCancerCancer navamsa, in Pisces: the dissolving fire — the sacrifice, the compassion, the ascetic who gives everything to the water. The most spiritual pada and the most emotionally exposed.

No pada of Purva Bhadrapada is vargottama. The first pada carries the mansion's fierceness most openly; the fourth, in Pisces under Jupiter twice over, carries its spirituality.

Moon in Purva Bhadrapada: the janma nakshatra

A birth is dated by its janma nakshatra, the Moon's mansion; the mind takes its colour from it and the dasha its starting point. A Moon in Purva Bhadrapada gives a mind that burns. These are people of intensity and conviction, who hold ideals with a heat others find alarming; who are unconventional, philosophical, often religious in an austere or radical way; who can sacrifice comfort, wealth and safety for a principle; and who are, at their worst, severe with those who do not share the flame. In the classical descriptions they have wealth through austerity, a nervous and anxious nature, skill in speech, and — in the harsher lines — a cruel streak and a fondness for the sinister.

The deeper current is the two faces. A Purva Bhadrapada Moon has the ascetic's fire and the fanatic's, and which one shows depends on where the fire is pointed: at the self, it lifts; at others, it burns. What the texts warn of is the second face — the zeal that becomes cruelty, the principle that becomes a purge. The native's work is the pillar's: to hold the fire vertical, from earth to heaven, and not let it fall sideways.

Jupiter in Saturn's sign gives the mansion's people their peculiar combination of idealism and severity. Purva Bhadrapada Moons are the tradition's reformers, ascetics and occultists — and, when the fire falls sideways, its inquisitors.

Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra female and male natives

The texts split the description by sex; both halves are kept, as readers want them, with the caution that a chart is not a sex — and, for Purva Bhadrapada, that the old texts describe the second face more than the first.

For a woman, the tradition gives Purva Bhadrapada intelligence, conviction, a religious or philosophical turn, independence of mind, and an intensity that others either follow or flee; it describes her as devoted to a cause or a teacher, capable of great sacrifice, anxious under the surface, and as someone whose marriage must share the fire or be burned by it. The caution is severity, and the anxiety the texts name.

For a man, the tradition gives Purva Bhadrapada a lean, intense frame, a piercing manner, eloquence in the service of a belief, a taste for austerity or for the occult, and a wealth that comes — the texts say — through tapas, effort held to a principle; it describes him as a leader of the convinced, generous to followers and hard on doubters. The caution is cruelty, and the fire fallen sideways.

For both, the fourth pada softens the severity into sacrifice, and Saturn's condition in the chart decides how disciplined the flame is.

    Career, money and health

Work. Aja Ekapada's mansion under Jupiter gives the professions of conviction: religious and philosophical teaching, especially of the austere and the radical; reform movements, activism, the causes that ask for sacrifice; the occult sciences, tantra, the disciplines of tapas; and the professions of the passage out — the funeral trades, palliative care, the priest of the last rites. Jupiter adds the law and the academy; Aquarius adds the sciences and the large system; the Pisces pada adds the ashram and the hospital. Purva Bhadrapada also does well in finance of the austere kind, in engineering of fire and energy, and in any work where a principle is held against resistance.

Money. Comes through austerity — the tradition's own word — and through the cause; the mansion's natives earn by effort held to a principle and spend on the vision. The Taurus pada holds most. The caution is the fortune sacrificed to the flame, or extracted from followers.

Health. The Aquarius padas govern the ankles, the calves and the circulation; the Pisces pada the feet and the lymph. Complaints of the circulation, of fevers and inflammations — the fire's own — and of the nervous, anxious constitution the texts name are classical, along with the illnesses of austerity carried too far. The oldest prescription for it is the fire banked: sleep, food, and a cause set down for a night.

The other planets in Purva Bhadrapada

A planet in Purva Bhadrapada takes on the mansion's fire and Jupiter's conviction, and then does what that planet does. The sign changes the reading at the fourth pada.

Sun in Purva Bhadrapada. In the sign of its enemy Saturn for the first three padas; in a friend's sign in Pisces. A self that stands for something and is known for it; a father who was severe, principled, or ascetic; authority through conviction. The Sun and Jupiter are friends, and this is a strong Sun for a leader of the convinced.

Moon in Purva Bhadrapada. See above.

Mars in Purva Bhadrapada. In a neutral sign in Aquarius, a friend's in Pisces; in the mansion of its friend Jupiter. The crusader's Mars: force with a cause, courage in the service of an ideal, the warrior-ascetic. The classical caution is the second face — violence for a principle.

Mercury in Purva Bhadrapada. In a neutral sign in Aquarius; in Pisces, debilitated — Mercury's fall is Pisces, deepest at 15°, ahead in Uttara Bhadrapada, so the fall in the fourth pada is early; in the mansion of Jupiter, with whom Mercury does not agree. The preacher's mind, the polemicist's: eloquent, convinced, sharp. Strong for teaching a cause; uneven for hearing the other side.

Jupiter in Purva Bhadrapada. In its own mansion; in Aquarius, in a neutral sign, the conviction is social and reforming; in Pisces, in its own sign as well, Jupiter rules sign and star together — one of the most spiritual Jupiter placements in the zodiac, the guru of tapas, faith at full heat. The caution in either is the fire fallen sideways.

Venus in Purva Bhadrapada. In a friend's sign in Aquarius; exalted in Pisces — Venus's exaltation is Pisces, deepest at 27°, far ahead in Revati, so the exaltation in the fourth pada is early but real. Love as devotion, or as sacrifice; the partner who shares the cause; beauty in austerity. An intense Venus, not an easy one.

Saturn in Purva Bhadrapada. In its own sign in Aquarius; in a neutral sign in Pisces; in the mansion of Jupiter. The fire disciplined: the ascetic of decades, the reformer who outlasts, the institution of the cause. Saturn here is the pillar's stone base, and it holds the flame vertical.

Rahu in Purva Bhadrapada. The fire without a base: fanaticism, the foreign cause, the hunger for transformation at any cost; the occultist obsessed. Rahu in Jupiter's mansion in Saturn's sign is the false prophet and the true revolutionary, and the tradition does not always tell them apart.

Ketu in Purva Bhadrapada. The fire already burned through: detachment from the cause, the ascetic who has completed the austerity, the mystic on the far side of the flame. Often a placement of liberation, and often one that begins with a great loss.

Lagna in Purva Bhadrapada. A lean, intense, sometimes tall frame, a piercing gaze, a manner that is serious and slightly unnerving. In the Aquarius padas the lagna lord is Saturn, with Rahu as co-lord; in the Pisces pada, Jupiter — the difference between the reformer and the renunciate.

A Jupiter placement is never one story. A Sun in Purva Bhadrapada under the Venus sub and a Sun in Purva Bhadrapada under the Saturn sub are two different fathers, two different careers, two different men — and Jupiter rules two other mansions besides this one, each with its own nine subs. That is why a chart is read planet by planet at this level, and why a page can only give you the outline. The nakshatra report takes your own chart and reads every planet in it to the pada and the sub-lord — which mansion, which quarter, whose sub — and says what each placement promises and in which dasha it delivers.

    The sub-lords of Purva Bhadrapada

This is the level at which the Krishnamurti method (KP) reads a chart: each nakshatra is cut into nine unequal parts in the proportion of the Vimshottari years, and the lord of the part — the sub-lord — decides what a planet here actually delivers. Two planets in Purva Bhadrapada with different sub-lords give different results. It is the step at which two charts that look alike come apart — where real astrology begins.

Three sub-lords of Purva Bhadrapada to read first. The Jupiter sub at the start (20°00′ to 21°46′40″ Aquarius) is Jupiter in its own mansion and its own sub — the most convinced, most idealistic degrees of the star, and the ones where the fire is best pointed. The Moon sub (29°26′40″ Aquarius to 0°33′20″ Pisces) holds the sign boundary; a planet there stands where the fire lit for the crowd meets the water that dissolves the self, with the Moon's feeling laid over it. The Rahu sub at the end (1°20′ to 3°20′ Pisces) is where the mansion's fire is most likely to become fanaticism — Rahu's hunger on Jupiter's conviction in the ocean — and is read with care.

The dasha the Moon here gives

A Moon in Purva Bhadrapada starts life in the Jupiter mahadasha (16 years), and the balance left at birth is the fraction of Purva Bhadrapada the Moon has still to cross, times 16: a Moon exactly halfway through Purva Bhadrapada has 8 years of Jupiter left. The order after that is fixed — Saturn → Mercury → Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu — and it is the same for everyone born with the Moon here; what differs is where in it a life is standing at any moment. A Purva Bhadrapada life begins in the sixteen-year Jupiter mahadasha, and since most Moons here are born partway through the mansion, Jupiter usually runs through childhood and into the teens — a childhood with a strong belief in it, a religious or principled household, a teacher. Then the nineteen-year Saturn, which typically covers the twenties and thirties: the austerity, the long effort for the cause, the fire disciplined. Mercury's seventeen years usually arrive in the forties and are where the conviction becomes teaching.

Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra compatibility and marriage life

The match is made on three counts: the yoni (the animal), the gana (the temperament) and the nadi (the constitution, which must differ). Purva Bhadrapada is lion yoni, manushya gana, adi nadi.

Best matches by yoni — the lion, whose other mansion is Dhanishta (full marks); the serpent (Rohini, Mrigashira), the rat (Magha, Purva Phalguni), the monkey (Purva Ashadha, Shravana) and the mongoose (Uttara Ashadha) score two with the lion, and every other animal scores one. Most difficult by yoni — the elephant (Bharani, Revati), the lion's enemy, scoring nothing.

By gana — Purva Bhadrapada is manushya, which matches deva and manushya well and rakshasa with difficulty. Purva Bhadrapada with Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva and Uttara Phalguni, Purva and Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada is manushya to manushya.

By nadi — Purva Bhadrapada is adi nadi. Purva Bhadrapada with Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshta, Mula or Shatabhisha is what the tradition calls nadi dosha.

After the tables comes the part that matters: a Purva Bhadrapada native is an intense, devoted, demanding partner who needs the fire shared, and needs one who can stand near it without being burned — and who can say, when the second face shows, that this is not the cause.

Which pada of Purva Bhadrapada is best, and which is difficult?

Asked plainly, the question is where the trouble sits. For Purva Bhadrapada the tradition's answer is the first pada, in the Aries navamsa — not for a computed point but because the mansion's fierceness is most open there: the fire in a fighting navamsa, the second face nearest the surface. The fourth pada, in Pisces, is the most spiritual and the most sacrificing — the best for the ascetic, the hardest for the person who needs to keep something for themselves. The second, in Taurus, is the steadiest and the best for wealth. The third is the most eloquent. No pada of Purva Bhadrapada is bad for everyone; the first is the one where the fire most needs a base.

The sky for Purva Bhadrapada Moons in 2026–27

Dates computed, not remembered: Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, true node. To say it directly: a Purva Bhadrapada Moon in the Aquarius padas is in the closing phase of sade sati — Saturn in the second from the Moon until 3 June 2027, with a return between 20 October 2027 and 23 February 2028; Jupiter, the mansion's lord, in the sixth from that Moon until 31 October, previewing the seventh until 25 January and returning to the sixth until June 2027; and Rahu on the Aquarius Moon until 25 November with Ketu in the seventh, then Rahu in the twelfth and Ketu in the sixth. A Purva Bhadrapada Moon in the Pisces pada is at the peak of sade sati — Saturn on the Moon itself until 3 June 2027, and again from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028; Jupiter in the fifth from that Moon until 31 October, previewing the sixth until 25 January and returning to the fifth until June 2027; Rahu in the twelfth and Ketu in the sixth until 25 November, then Rahu in the eleventh and Ketu in the fifth. Saturn's own degrees this year — retrograde from 20°31′ back to 13°42′ Pisces — lie in Revati and Uttara Bhadrapada, not in this mansion's Pisces pada; the Pisces-pada Purva Bhadrapada Moon has Saturn in its sign but not on its mansion's degrees. Mars enters Leo on 12 November: the seventh from an Aquarius Moon, the sixth from a Pisces one.

    Remedy and mantra

The classical remedy for an afflicted Purva Bhadrapada placement is worship of Rudra in his Aja Ekapada form — the Rudram, Shiva's mantra Om Namah Shivaya, and the fire offering, since the mansion is a pillar of fire — and of Jupiter as the mansion's lord, with Om Gurave Namah on Thursday. The tradition names tapas itself as the remedy — a discipline chosen rather than a zeal imposed — and Dakshinamurti, Shiva as the silent teacher, for the fire turned to wisdom. Before the mantra comes mercy — the mansion's affliction is the second face, and it is healed by one act of leniency toward a doubter. A remedy — a puja, a gemstone, a rudraksha, a yantra — is prescribed to the chart, and the chart decides which.

    Questions we are asked

What is Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra? The twenty-fifth of the 27 nakshatras, from 20°00′ Aquarius to 3°20′ Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, with Aja Ekapada — the one-footed goat, a pillar of fire — as deity and a two-faced man, or the front legs of a funeral cot, as symbol. It stands for the fire of conviction: austerity, idealism, transformation, and the zeal that can burn either way.

Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra is which rashi? Two. The first, second and third padas are in Aquarius (Kumbha or Kumbh); the fourth is in Pisces (Meena or Meen). Most Purva Bhadrapada Moons are Aquarius Moons.

Who is the lord of Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra? Jupiter. The dasha for a Moon here begins with Jupiter's sixteen years, then Saturn's nineteen.

What are the Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra characteristics? Intense, idealistic, unconventional, austere, eloquent, anxious; capable of great sacrifice and great severity; the reformer and the ascetic, and sometimes the inquisitor.

Which pada of Purva Bhadrapada is bad? None for everyone. The first, in Aries, is where the mansion's fierceness is most open; the fourth, in Pisces, is the most spiritual; the second is the steadiest.

What is the Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra symbol? A two-faced man — the fire that looks toward heaven and toward the grave — and the front legs of a funeral cot, the beginning of the passage out.

Is Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra good for marriage? Intense, devoted partners who need the cause shared. Match by yoni (lion), gana (manushya) and nadi (adi); the lion–elephant pairing is the pair the yoni count marks at nothing.

What does 2026 hold for Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra? It depends on the pada. Aquarius-pada Moons are in the closing phase of sade sati with Rahu on the Moon until 25 November; Pisces-pada Moons are at the peak, with Saturn in the sign though not on the mansion's own degrees. The computed sky for both is above.

This page teaches; it does not advise on health, law or money. A nakshatra is one line in a chart, not the chart.

The reading of your own Purva Bhadrapada — Moon, lagna, sub-lord and dasha at once — is a consultation, not a page, and it comes with the remedy if one is called for.
