Bharani (the same name in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam) — 13°20′ Aries to 26°40′ Aries, in Aries; lord Venus; deity Yama. Lahiri sidereal.
Bharani nakshatra is the second lunar mansion, from 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Aries, and it is the star of bearing — bearing children, bearing burdens, bearing the consequences of what was begun in Ashwini. Its deity is Yama, the god of death and of dharma, who keeps the account; its symbol is the yoni, the womb, and in some tellings a boat, which carries across; its lord is Venus. A person with the Moon here has more endurance than anyone expects from an Aries Moon, a strong appetite for life, and a sense of duty that can turn into a sense of judgement.
What follows is our reading of Bharani: the span and the sign, the four padas and the navamsa each one reaches, the Moon and every other planet placed here, the sub-lords of the Krishnamurti method, the dasha a birth here begins, and the computed sky this Moon is under in 2026–27. Sanskrit terms are explained on first use.

The story and the symbol
Yama is the first mortal to die, and so the first to find the road, and he presides over it ever after: the lord of the ancestors, the keeper of the ledger in which every act is written, the one who is fair because he is exact. Bharani is his mansion, and its symbol is the yoni — the womb, the gate through which life enters, which the same tradition pairs with the gate through which it leaves. The Vedic word bharana means to bear, to carry, to maintain, and the mansion is all three: the mother who carries the child, the worker who carries the load, the judge who carries the sentence.
Venus as lord seems a strange partner for Yama until you see what they share. Venus is desire and the body's appetite; Yama is what desire costs and what the body owes. Bharani sits exactly between them — the mansion of pleasure taken seriously, of creation with a bill attached. It is why Bharani natives are often intensely alive, sensual, fertile in every sense, and also why they carry guilt more heavily than their neighbours, and why they are drawn to the work of endings: the midwife and the undertaker are both Bharani.
The mansion contains the exact degree of Saturn's fall, 20° Aries, and the exact degree of the Sun's exaltation is just behind it in Ashwini. Bharani is where the king is strongest and the servant weakest — a place of extremes, which is how its natives tend to live.
Which rashi is Bharani nakshatra? (Bharani nakshatra rasi)
Bharani lies entirely inside Aries (Mesha or Mesh rashi), from 13°20′ to 26°40′ — the middle of the sign. A Bharani Moon is an Aries Moon, and the Aries reading applies: Mars-ruled, forceful, cardinal, first. What Bharani changes is the tempo. Ashwini before it is speed; Krittika after it is the cut; Bharani in the middle is weight and stamina, the Aries native who finishes what the others start. Venus's lordship over a Mars sign is a mixed relationship — the two are not friends in the Parashari scheme — and that friction is the Bharani signature: the fighter who wants to be loved, the lover who fights.
The four padas of Bharani
Four padas of 3°20′ make up every nakshatra; each one maps to a navamsa sign, the ninth division of the chart, where the inner life and the marriage are read. Bharani's four padas run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio.
| Pada | Degrees | Navamsa | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 13°20′ Aries – 16°40′ Aries | Leo | Leo navamsa: the royal Bharani — proud, creative, generous, wanting to be seen. The strongest pada for leadership and the one most likely to over-reach. |
| 2 | 16°40′ Aries – 20°00′ Aries | Virgo | Virgo navamsa: the working Bharani — exact, dutiful, good with detail and with the body. The healer and the accountant of the mansion; the most reliable pada. |
| 3 | 20°00′ Aries – 23°20′ Aries | Libra | Libra navamsa: Venus's own navamsa in Venus's mansion — the most sensual and the most relational pada. Beauty, partnership, the arts; the danger of losing oneself in the other. |
| 4 | 23°20′ Aries – 26°40′ Aries | Scorpio | Scorpio navamsa: the deep Bharani — intense, secretive, transformative, drawn to the hidden side of the mansion's themes: sexuality, death, inheritance, the occult. |
No pada of Bharani is vargottama, so none has the doubled strength that Ashwini's first pada has; the mansion's strength is in its endurance, not its purity. Saturn's exact fall at 20°00′ sits at the boundary of the second and third padas.
Moon in Bharani: the janma nakshatra
The janma nakshatra is the Moon's mansion at birth; it names the mind and starts the dasha clock. A Moon in Bharani is a mind that takes things on. These are people who carry — a family, a business, a grief, a grudge — and who are proud of carrying it. They have strong appetites and a strong will, they are more sensual than the Aries stereotype allows, and they have a temper that is slower to rise than Ashwini's and slower to fall. The texts assign them truthfulness, health, skill, and a firmness that can read as stubbornness.
The deeper trait comes from Yama: they judge. A Bharani Moon knows what is fair and what is owed and will say so, and their sense of justice is the best thing about them until it curdles into rigidity or into carrying resentment as faithfully as they carry everything else. The work of the placement is to let the ledger close — to forgive what was paid.
Venus adds the warmth. Bharani Moons love deeply and physically, are often fertile and attached to children, and have an artist's eye for what is alive. They are the most maternal of the Aries Moons, in men as well as women, and the most likely to build something that outlasts them.
Bharani nakshatra female and male natives
The classical descriptions are given separately for women and men; we keep them because readers ask, with the caution that a chart is not a sex.
For a woman, the tradition gives Bharani a strong body, a strong will, and a straight tongue; it describes her as devoted to her family and demanding of it, fertile, capable, and not easily governed. The old texts add a caution about pride and about a marriage that is a contest. What they are describing, in modern terms, is a woman who runs things and expects to be respected for it.
For a man, the tradition gives Bharani good health, courage, sensual appetite, a love of women and of comfort, and an inclination to take on more responsibility than he is given. He is described as generous, sometimes to a fault, and as someone whose anger is remembered. The caution is about excess — of appetite and of judgement.
In each case, the Moon's own state — its phase, its aspects, its sub-lord — decides how much of the description arrives.
Career, money and health
Work. The mansion of bearing and of Yama's account gives two families of work. The first is care at the thresholds: obstetrics and midwifery, fertility work, palliative care, funeral and cemetery work, and the law — especially the judge, the probate and inheritance lawyer, the one who decides what is owed. The second is the body and its appetites: food, hospitality, the arts that use the body, sexuality studied or sold, fashion, the adult and the entertainment industries. Bharani also does well in any work requiring stamina under load — agriculture, logistics, heavy industry, sport that rewards endurance rather than speed.
Money. Bharani earns steadily and spends on pleasure and on dependents. The Virgo pada saves; the Libra pada spends on beauty; the Leo pada spends to be seen. Inheritance and money through a partner or through death are classical Bharani sources.
Health. The head remains Aries's part of the body, and Bharani adds the reproductive organs, which are its own. Fevers, headaches, and complaints of the womb or the genitals are classical; so is the wear of carrying too much for too long.
The other planets in Bharani
A planet placed in Bharani inherits the mansion's weight and Venus's appetite, before its own nature shows.
Sun in Bharani. Exalted by sign, past its deepest degree. A father who was a judge in one sense or another; a self that knows its worth and expects the bill to be paid. Strong, proud, dutiful; capable of harshness in the name of fairness.
Moon in Bharani. Read above, under the janma nakshatra.
Mars in Bharani. In its own sign, in Venus's mansion — Mars with a body and a desire. Passion, stamina, sexual force, the athlete of endurance rather than of speed. The classical caution about accidents holds here, with a second about violence in love.
Mercury in Bharani. In a neutral sign and a heavy mansion. A mind that weighs; the advocate, the accountant of consequences. Slower than an Ashwini Mercury and more exact.
Jupiter in Bharani. In a friend's sign but in Venus's mansion, and Jupiter and Venus are the two gurus who do not agree. Faith with appetite in it; the teacher who enjoys life; a philosophy of duty. Usually good for children.
Venus in Bharani. In its own mansion, in a neutral sign. Full-strength desire: beauty, art, love, fertility, and the tendency to want more of all of them. One of the stronger Venus placements for the arts, and one of the weaker for restraint.
Saturn in Bharani. At its fall, and at the bottom of it — 20°, in the middle of the mansion. Effort resented, duty felt as burden, authority struggled against — or, in the better version, the slow builder who carries the family for decades and is honoured late. Neecha bhanga through Mars or the Sun lifts it; Venus as star-lord softens it.
Rahu in Bharani. Appetite without a ceiling; ambition through the body or through what the body wants; sudden inheritances, sudden losses. Rahu here is often the foreigner who marries in, or the native who leaves to marry out.
Ketu in Bharani. Detachment from the mansion's appetites — the celibate in the star of the womb, or the one who has carried enough and sets it down. Often a life with an early ending in it, a death or a departure, that shapes everything after.
Lagna in Bharani. A strong, often broad frame; a steady gaze; the manner of someone who is used to being relied on. The lagna lord Mars's placement decides whether the load is carried well or resented.
Two people with the Moon in Bharani can have nothing else in common: one has it in the first pada under the Venus sub, the other in the fourth under Mercury's, and the same star gives them different minds, different dashas, different marriages. The paragraphs above are the mansion; the person is the combination. A nakshatra report reads that combination for your chart — every planet's nakshatra, pada and sub-lord, and the dasha the Moon starts — so that what this page says in general becomes what is true of you.
The sub-lords of Bharani
This is the level at which the Krishnamurti method (KP) reads a chart: each nakshatra is cut into nine unequal parts in the proportion of the Vimshottari years, and the lord of the part — the sub-lord — decides what a planet here actually delivers. Two planets in Bharani with different sub-lords give different results. It is the step at which two charts that look alike come apart — where real astrology begins.
| Sub-lord | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | 13°20′ Aries | 15°33′20″ Aries |
| Sun | 15°33′20″ Aries | 16°13′20″ Aries |
| Moon | 16°13′20″ Aries | 17°20′ Aries |
| Mars | 17°20′ Aries | 18°06′40″ Aries |
| Rahu | 18°06′40″ Aries | 20°06′40″ Aries |
| Jupiter | 20°06′40″ Aries | 21°53′20″ Aries |
| Saturn | 21°53′20″ Aries | 24°00′ Aries |
| Mercury | 24°00′ Aries | 25°53′20″ Aries |
| Ketu | 25°53′20″ Aries | 26°40′ Aries |
Two rules of thumb for the sub-lords of Bharani. The Venus sub at the very start (13°20′ to 15°33′20″) is Venus in Venus's mansion, the most sensual and creative degrees of the whole nakshatra — and the widest sub, so many Bharani planets fall here. The Rahu sub (18°06′40″ to 20°06′40″) holds Saturn's deepest fall at 20°00′, and a planet there — Saturn above all — has Rahu's appetite laid over the mansion's burden, which is the heaviest combination Bharani offers. The Saturn sub (21°53′20″ to 24°00′) is where duty is felt most as duty. The Ketu sub at the very end (25°53′20″ to 26°40′) is where Bharani's detachment lives — the part of the mansion that can set the load down.
The dasha the Moon here gives
A Moon in Bharani starts life in the Venus mahadasha (20 years), and the balance left at birth is the fraction of Bharani the Moon has still to cross, times 20: a Moon exactly halfway through Bharani has 10 years of Venus left. The order after that is fixed — Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → Ketu — and it is the same for everyone born with the Moon here; what differs is where in it a life is standing at any moment. A Bharani life begins in the twenty-year Venus mahadasha, and since most Bharani Moons are born partway through the mansion, the Venus period usually ends somewhere before the age of twenty. Then comes the six-year Sun, then the ten-year Moon, and then the seven-year Mars — so the Bharani native typically spends their late twenties and thirties under the luminaries and Mars, the decades in which the mansion's themes of duty and bearing are most tested.
Bharani nakshatra compatibility and marriage life
The tradition matches by three tables — the yoni (the animal, for physical harmony), the gana (the temperament) and the nadi (the constitution, which must differ). Bharani is elephant yoni, manushya gana, madhya nadi.
Best matches by yoni — the elephant, whose other mansion is Revati (full marks); then the sheep (Krittika, Pushya), the serpent (Rohini, Mrigashira), the buffalo (Hasta, Swati) and the monkey (Purva Ashadha, Shravana), each scoring three with the elephant in the table. Most difficult by yoni — the lion (Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada), the elephant's enemy, scoring nothing.
By gana — Bharani is manushya, the human temperament, which matches deva and manushya well and rakshasa with difficulty. Bharani with Rohini, Ardra, Purva and Uttara Phalguni, Purva and Uttara Ashadha, Purva and Uttara Bhadrapada is manushya to manushya.
By nadi — Bharani is madhya nadi, and partners should not share a nadi. Bharani with Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta or Uttara Bhadrapada is nadi dosha in the classical count.
Off the tables: a Bharani native needs a partner who does not mistake their carrying for consent to be carried, and who can bear being weighed.
Which pada of Bharani is best, and which is difficult?
The question, as it is really asked, is "which pada carries the trouble." For Bharani the tradition's answer is the third pada, not because Libra is a bad navamsa — it is Venus's own — but because Saturn's deepest fall, 20°00′, is its opening degree, and a planet at the very start of the third pada, above all Saturn, is at the bottom of the well. The first pada, in the Leo navamsa, is the strongest for standing and the proudest. The second, in Virgo, is the most dependable. The fourth, in Scorpio, is the deepest and the one to read for the hidden side of the mansion's themes. There is no pada of Bharani that is bad for everyone; there are degrees of it that are hard for particular planets.
The sky for Bharani Moons in 2026–27
Every date below was calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri, true node), not recalled. For an Aries Moon this is the opening phase of sade sati (Saturn in the twelfth from your Moon) until 3 June 2027, when Saturn arrives on your Moon and the peak begins. Jupiter, exalted, is in the fourth house from your Moon until 31 October 2026, previews the fifth from 31 October to 25 January 2027, returns to the fourth until 26 June 2027, and then settles in the fifth. Rahu is in the eleventh and Ketu in the fifth until 25 November 2026; after that Rahu is in the tenth and Ketu in the fourth for eighteen months. In everyday terms: Bharani is the mansion of Saturn's fall, so the peak from June 2027 will ask for the patience the mansion is least good at. Jupiter in the fourth house from the Moon for most of the coming year favours home, property and the mother; the preview of the fifth from 31 October to 25 January is the window for children, which is Bharani's own theme. Mars enters Leo, the fifth from your Moon, on 12 November and meets Jupiter and Ketu there in the week that follows.

Remedy and mantra
The classical remedy for an afflicted Bharani placement is worship of Yama, and of Venus as the mansion's lord. The mantra is Om Yamaya Namah; Friday, Venus's day, is Bharani's day, and Lakshmi is worshipped for Venus's periods. Yama is also honoured by honouring the ancestors — the tarpana and the annual offerings — which the tradition holds to be the deepest remedy for this mansion, since Bharani's burdens are so often inherited ones. A remedy — a puja, a gemstone, a rudraksha, a yantra — is prescribed to the chart, not to the nakshatra, and the chart decides which; so we do not name a gemstone here without it.
Questions we are asked
What is Bharani nakshatra? The second of the 27 nakshatras, 13°20′ to 26°40′ Aries, ruled by Venus, with Yama as deity and the yoni — the womb — as symbol. It stands for bearing, endurance, appetite, and the account that is kept.
Bharani nakshatra is which rashi? Aries (Mesha, or Mesh rashi). The whole nakshatra lies inside Aries.
Who is the lord of Bharani nakshatra? Venus. The dasha for a Moon here begins with Venus's twenty years, then the Sun's six.
What are the Bharani nakshatra characteristics? Strong-willed, enduring, sensual, dutiful, fertile, judging; slow to anger and slow to forgive; the one who carries the family.
Which pada of Bharani is bad? None for everyone. The third pada opens on Saturn's deepest fall at 20° Aries, and Saturn there is at its weakest; the first pada is the proudest and strongest, the second the most dependable.
What is the Bharani nakshatra symbol? The yoni, the womb — the gate of birth, paired with Yama's gate of death. Some traditions give a boat, which carries across.
Is Bharani nakshatra good for marriage? Bharani natives are loyal, physical and demanding partners. Match by yoni (elephant), gana (manushya) and nadi (madhya); the elephant–lion pairing is the one the table scores lowest.
What does 2026 hold for Bharani nakshatra? Sade sati's opening phase until June 2027, then the peak; Jupiter in the fourth from the Moon for most of the year; Mars, Jupiter and Ketu together in the fifth in mid-November. The computed sky is above.
This is teaching, not advice — not medical, legal or financial — and a nakshatra is one line of a chart, never the whole of it.
To have your Bharani placements read as one chart — the Moon, the lagna, the sub-lords, the dasha — is what a private consultation is for.
