Ashwini (also called Aswini in Tamil, Ashwini in Telugu, Ashwathi in Malayalam) — 0°00′ Aries to 13°20′ Aries, in Aries; lord Ketu; deity Ashwini Kumaras. Lahiri sidereal.
Ashwini nakshatra is the first of the twenty-seven lunar mansions — the first 13°20′ of Aries — and the whole of it is about beginning. Its symbol is a horse's head; its deities are the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin physicians of the gods who ride the dawn; its lord is Ketu, the planet of what was already learned before this life began. A person with the Moon here is quick, direct, and healing by instinct, and the same quickness is the thing they have to learn to steer.
Here is Ashwini as we read it: the span and the sign, the four padas and where they send a planet in the navamsa, the Moon here and every other planet here, the sub-lords the Krishnamurti method uses, the dasha a birth here begins, and the sky this Moon is under in 2026–27. Every Sanskrit term is glossed where it first appears.

The story and the symbol
The Ashwini Kumaras are twins born of the Sun and Sanjna, the Sun's wife, at a time when she had taken the form of a mare to hide from his heat — which is why they are horse-headed in the older telling and why the mansion carries a horse's head as its emblem. They are the physicians of the gods: they restore the sage Chyavana's youth, they give the sage Dadhichi a horse's head so that he can teach a secret without breaking an oath, and they arrive first, at dawn, before the rest of the sky is awake. Three things come from the story and all three are in the nakshatra. Speed, because the horse and the dawn are the fastest things the ancients knew. Healing, because that is the twins' work. And a certain outsider quality — the Ashwins were at first refused a share of the sacrifice by the other gods and had to be argued in — so an Ashwini native often does something first, and is given the credit only later.
Ketu's lordship adds the last piece. Ketu is the tail of the eclipse dragon, the part that has already been through; it holds what a soul mastered before and does not need to be taught again. That is why Ashwini talent looks like instinct: the healer who knows where the pain is before the patient says, the rider who does not think about the horse. It is also why Ashwini people are impatient with instruction. They already know, or feel that they do.
Which rashi is Ashwini nakshatra? (Ashwini nakshatra rasi)
Ashwini lies entirely inside Aries (Mesha or Mesh rashi), from 0°00′ to 13°20′. So a Moon in Ashwini is an Aries Moon, and the rashi reading — Mars-ruled, fiery, cardinal — sits under everything on this page. The nakshatra is what tells two Aries Moons apart: an Ashwini Moon is quicker and more healing than a Bharani Moon, which is heavier and more about endurance, and both differ from the Krittika Moon at the end of the sign, which cuts. Ashwini's own lord Ketu and Aries's lord Mars are friends, and Ketu is often read as "Mars-like", so there is no quarrel between the sign and the star here — the two pull the same way, which is part of why Ashwini is so fast. The first 0°48′ of the mansion is also the end of a gandanta, the knot between Pisces and Aries, and a planet there carries the threshold with it.
The four padas of Ashwini
A nakshatra divides into four padas, quarters of 3°20′, and each pada corresponds to one sign of the navamsa — the ninth divisional chart, read for the inner life and for marriage. The pada is how a nakshatra reading gets specific.
| Pada | Degrees | Navamsa | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0°00′ Aries – 3°20′ Aries | Aries | Aries navamsa: the pure Ashwini — fastest, most physical, most independent. Vargottama (the same sign in the rashi and the navamsa), which strengthens whatever sits here. Athletes, surgeons, soldiers, founders. The first 0°48′ is gandanta. |
| 2 | 3°20′ Aries – 6°40′ Aries | Taurus | Taurus navamsa: the speed gets a body and a bank balance. Practical, comfort-seeking, good with hands and money; the healer who runs a clinic rather than a mission. |
| 3 | 6°40′ Aries – 10°00′ Aries | Gemini | Gemini navamsa: the speed goes into the mind and the mouth. Quick words, quick reasoning, the messenger and the diagnostician. Restless if not given a problem. |
| 4 | 10°00′ Aries – 13°20′ Aries | Cancer | Cancer navamsa: the speed turns toward care. The most emotional pada; the nurse, the rescuer, the one who arrives first when someone is hurt. Attachment comes fast and can be withdrawn just as fast. |
The fourth pada is the one the tradition watches for health and for the mother, because Cancer is the Moon's sign and the Moon in the fourth pada of a Ketu mansion can be tender. The first pada, being vargottama, is where Ashwini's gifts are least diluted — and where its faults are least softened.
Moon in Ashwini: the janma nakshatra
The janma nakshatra is the mansion the Moon occupies at birth; it names the mind, and it names the first dasha. A Moon in Ashwini makes a mind that moves first and explains later. These are people who cannot sit in a waiting room. They decide fast, act fast, recover fast — from illness, from failure, from love — and they are often physically striking, with a youthful look that lasts. The old texts credit them with beauty, intelligence, a fondness for ornament, and a quick temper that passes as quickly as it comes.
The trait beneath the traits is the one from the story: they are healers, whether or not they work in medicine. An Ashwini Moon notices what is wrong and moves to fix it, in a body, a machine, a company or a friend. The cost is that they fix things that were not theirs to fix and move on before the fixing is complete. Patience is the whole of their spiritual work.
The Ketu lordship shows in a certain aloneness. Ashwini people are liked and are rarely lonely, but they keep a part of themselves back, and they do not need approval the way a Venus- or Moon-ruled nakshatra needs it. It makes them good in emergencies and sometimes hard to hold onto.
Ashwini nakshatra female and male natives
The old texts describe the sexes separately and we keep the descriptions because readers ask for them, with the caution that a chart is not a sex.
For a woman, the tradition gives Ashwini a striking appearance, a direct manner, quick intelligence and a dislike of being managed. She is described as devoted where she chooses to be and impossible to keep where she does not; as a natural healer and often as a working woman in a time when the texts did not expect one. The old texts' caution is about impulsiveness in relationships — the fast attachment and the fast exit.
For a man, the tradition gives Ashwini a handsome, youthful look, courage, a love of speed and of the outdoors, generosity, and a temper that flares and clears. He is described as attractive to others and not always careful with money. The caution is the same as hers: he acts before he counts.
For either, the rest of the chart decides how much of this shows. A Moon in Ashwini with Saturn's aspect is slower and steadier than the text; with Mars's aspect it is faster still.
Career, money and health
Work. Medicine and everything near it — surgery, emergency care, physiotherapy, veterinary work, pharmacy — is the classical Ashwini field, and it still holds. Beyond that: anything requiring speed and nerve. Sport, transport, the military and police, rescue services, racing, aviation. In business, the founder rather than the manager; the person who starts three ventures and hands them on. Ashwini also does well in any field where a fast first opinion matters — diagnosis, first-response, trouble-shooting.
Money. Comes in bursts and goes the same way. The Taurus pada holds it best. The tradition warns against speculation for Ashwini Moons, not because they lack judgement but because they lack the patience to wait for a position to mature.
Health. The head, the brain and the face are Ashwini's parts of the body; headaches, fevers and injuries from speed — falls, accidents, sports — are its classical complaints. The Ashwini native recovers unusually fast and often neglects the recovery because of it.
The other planets in Ashwini
Every planet in the chart has a nakshatra, and a planet in Ashwini takes on the mansion's speed and Ketu's detachment, and then speaks in its own voice.
Sun in Ashwini. Exalted by sign (the Sun's exaltation is Aries, and its deepest point, 10°, is the first degree of Ashwini's fourth pada). A strong, self-starting Sun; leadership by example; a father who was decisive or absent, sometimes both. Ketu's lordship keeps the ego a little apart from the crowd it leads.
Mars in Ashwini. In its own sign and in a friend's mansion. Pure drive; the athlete's Mars, the surgeon's Mars. Fast anger, faster forgiveness. The danger is the accident that comes from going too quickly.
Mercury in Ashwini. In a neutral sign and a quick mansion. Fast talk, fast thinking, a mind that jumps to the answer and is usually right and occasionally rude. Good for diagnosis and for anything done under time pressure.
Jupiter in Ashwini. In a friend's sign. Wisdom that arrives as instinct; the teacher who explains by doing; faith that does not need argument. One of the better placements for a healer, since Jupiter is the physician's grace.
Venus in Ashwini. In a neutral sign, and in Ketu's mansion, which is not Venus's friend. Love comes fast and can leave fast; beauty is athletic rather than soft; money is spent on speed — vehicles, travel, the body. The classical placement of the person who marries young and learns.
Saturn in Ashwini. Debilitated by sign (Saturn's fall is Aries, deepest at 20°, which is Bharani; in Ashwini it is falling but not yet at the bottom). Slowness in a mansion of speed: effort that is late, or frustration with those who are slow, or a career built over long years in a fast field. Neecha bhanga — the cancelling of the fall — is possible when Mars or the Sun is strong.
Rahu in Ashwini. Ambition with a foreign or unconventional edge in Ketu's own mansion — Rahu and Ketu being one body, this is Rahu at the far end of its own axis. Big appetites, sudden moves, the person who reinvents themselves more than once.
Ketu in Ashwini. Ketu in its own mansion: the past-life healer, the natural mystic with a horse under them. A detachment even from its own speed; sometimes a life that starts with a loss and finds its footing through helping.
Lagna in Ashwini. The rising sign's nakshatra shapes the body and the manner. A youthful, athletic frame; a direct gaze; the habit of walking into a room first. The lagna lord Mars's placement decides whether the speed is a blessing or a series of collisions.
A Ketu placement is never one story. A Sun in Ashwini under the Venus sub and a Sun in Ashwini under the Saturn sub are two different fathers, two different careers, two different men — and Ketu rules two other mansions besides this one, each with its own nine subs. That is why a chart is read planet by planet at this level, and why a page can only give you the outline. The nakshatra report takes your own chart and reads every planet in it to the pada and the sub-lord — which mansion, which quarter, whose sub — and says what each placement promises and in which dasha it delivers.
The sub-lords of Ashwini
This is the level at which the Krishnamurti method (KP) reads a chart: each nakshatra is cut into nine unequal parts in the proportion of the Vimshottari years, and the lord of the part — the sub-lord — decides what a planet here actually delivers. Two planets in Ashwini with different sub-lords give different results. It is the step at which two charts that look alike come apart — where real astrology begins.
| Sub-lord | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 0°00′ Aries | 0°46′40″ Aries |
| Venus | 0°46′40″ Aries | 3°00′ Aries |
| Sun | 3°00′ Aries | 3°40′ Aries |
| Moon | 3°40′ Aries | 4°46′40″ Aries |
| Mars | 4°46′40″ Aries | 5°33′20″ Aries |
| Rahu | 5°33′20″ Aries | 7°33′20″ Aries |
| Jupiter | 7°33′20″ Aries | 9°20′ Aries |
| Saturn | 9°20′ Aries | 11°26′40″ Aries |
| Mercury | 11°26′40″ Aries | 13°20′ Aries |
Two rules of thumb for reading the sub-lords of Ashwini. A planet in the Venus sub (0°46′40″ to 3°00′) has the widest of the nine parts to sit in and takes on Venus's softening — the fast healer who is also charming. A planet in the Ketu sub at the very start (0° to 0°46′40″) is in Ketu's mansion and Ketu's sub at once, and is also in the gandanta: the most detached, most otherworldly degree of the whole nakshatra, and the one to read with care for the Moon and the lagna. The Saturn sub (9°20′ to 11°26′40″) is where Ashwini's speed is most held back, and often where its patience is learned.
The dasha the Moon here gives
A Moon in Ashwini starts life in the Ketu mahadasha (7 years), and the balance left at birth is the fraction of Ashwini the Moon has still to cross, times 7: a Moon exactly halfway through Ashwini has 3.5 years of Ketu left. The order after that is fixed — Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury — and it is the same for everyone born with the Moon here; what differs is where in it a life is standing at any moment. The Ketu period at the start of an Ashwini life is short — at most seven years, usually less — and it is often the reason the childhood was unsettled or the early years carry a loss or a move. What follows is the twenty-year Venus mahadasha, which is why so many Ashwini natives find that life became easier, and more about love and money, somewhere in their first decade or two.
Ashwini nakshatra compatibility and marriage life
Matching by nakshatra is done through three tables: the yoni (the animal, for physical harmony), the gana (the temperament — deva, manushya or rakshasa), and the nadi (the constitution, which must differ between partners). Ashwini is horse yoni, deva gana, adi nadi.
Best matches by yoni — Ashwini's own animal, the horse, whose other mansion is Shatabhisha (full marks); then the serpent (Rohini, Mrigashira) and the monkey (Purva Ashadha, Shravana), which score three of four with the horse. Most difficult by yoni — the buffalo (Hasta, Swati), the horse's enemy in the table, scoring nothing; the tiger, cow, deer and lion score one.
By gana — Ashwini is deva, and deva matches deva or manushya well (Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana and Revati are the other deva mansions); the tradition marks deva with rakshasa as a mismatch unless the rest of the chart carries it.
By nadi — Ashwini is adi nadi, and the rule is that partners should not share a nadi. So Ashwini with Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshta, Mula, Shatabhisha or Purva Bhadrapada — the other adi mansions — makes the nadi dosha, which the tradition takes seriously and which has its own exceptions.
The matching that matters most is not in any of these tables: it is whether the partner can keep up, and whether they mind that the Ashwini native leaves first.
Which pada of Ashwini is best, and which is difficult?
No pada of Ashwini is bad in the sense the question usually means. The tradition's cautions are two. The first pada carries the gandanta in its first 0°48′, and a Moon or lagna in that sliver is at a threshold — read for early instability, and for a life that begins with a knot to untie. The fourth pada, in the Cancer navamsa, is the most emotionally exposed and the one the texts watch for the mother's health and the native's own. The first pada is otherwise the strongest, being vargottama; the second is the steadiest; the third the cleverest. "Which pada is bad" is the wrong question. "Which pada, and what is on it" is the one we can answer.
The sky for Ashwini Moons in 2026–27
All dates here are computed — Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, true node. For an Aries Moon this is the opening phase of sade sati (Saturn in the twelfth from your Moon) until 3 June 2027, when Saturn arrives on your Moon and the peak begins. Jupiter, exalted, is in the fourth house from your Moon until 31 October 2026, previews the fifth from 31 October to 25 January 2027, returns to the fourth until 26 June 2027, and then settles in the fifth. Rahu is in the eleventh and Ketu in the fifth until 25 November 2026; after that Rahu is in the tenth and Ketu in the fourth for eighteen months. Put simply: the opening phase of sade sati is a year of loosening, and the peak from June 2027 is the year that asks for the patience Ashwini lacks. Jupiter in the fourth house from the Moon for most of the coming year, which the tradition reads as good for home, property and the mother, and its preview of the fifth from 31 October to 25 January is the window for children and creative work. Ketu in the fifth until 25 November, then in the fourth, is the detached note on the same houses. Mars — Ashwini's friend — enters Leo, the fifth from your Moon, on 12 November and meets Jupiter there on the 16th.

Remedy and mantra
The classical remedy for a troubled Ashwini placement — a Moon or lagna here with affliction, or the Ketu dasha running hard — is worship of the Ashwini Kumaras and of Ketu. The mantra is Om Ashwini Kumarabhyam Namah, or the Vedic verse to the twins for those who can recite it. Ganesha is worshipped for Ketu's periods. Tuesday, Mars's day, is the day for Ashwini, and the horse and the dawn are its offerings — feeding horses, or rising early. A remedy — a puja, a gemstone, a rudraksha, a yantra — is prescribed to the chart, not to the nakshatra, and the chart decides which; so we do not name a gemstone here without it.
Questions we are asked
What is Ashwini nakshatra? The first of the 27 nakshatras, 0°00′ to 13°20′ Aries, ruled by Ketu, with the Ashwini Kumaras as deity and a horse's head as symbol. It stands for speed, healing and beginnings.
Ashwini nakshatra is which rashi? Aries (Mesha, or Mesh rashi). The whole nakshatra lies inside Aries, so an Ashwini Moon is an Aries Moon.
Who is the lord of Ashwini nakshatra? Ketu. The dasha for a Moon here begins with Ketu's seven years, then Venus's twenty.
What are the Ashwini nakshatra characteristics? Quick, direct, healing, youthful, independent; fast to start and fast to leave; impatient with instruction; brave in emergencies.
Which pada of Ashwini is best? The first, in the Aries navamsa, is vargottama and the strongest; the first 0°48′ of it is gandanta and needs care. The fourth is the most emotional.
What is the Ashwini nakshatra symbol? A horse's head — for speed, power, and the twin horse-headed physicians who preside.
Is Ashwini nakshatra good for marriage? Ashwini natives marry for a spark and need a partner who can keep pace. Match by yoni (horse), gana (deva) and nadi (adi), then read the seventh house and Venus — the tables alone do not decide it.
What does 2026 hold for Ashwini nakshatra? Sade sati's opening phase until June 2027, then the peak; Jupiter in the fourth from the Moon for most of the year; Mars meeting Jupiter in the fifth on 16 November. The computed sky is above; what it means for you is in your chart.
For education. Not medical, legal or financial advice; a nakshatra is one line of a chart, not the chart.
Your own Ashwini placements — Moon, lagna, sub-lords and dasha read together — are a consultation's work: time with the chart, not a page.
