Lahiri sidereal. Saturn in Pisces from 29 March 2025 to 3 June 2027, with a short return to Pisces from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028.
Sade sati — Shani sade sati, Saturn's seven-and-a-half — means exactly that: seven and a half years. It is the period during which Saturn passes over the sign before your Moon, your Moon's sign, and the sign after it, two and a half years in each. It is the most feared transit in Vedic astrology and the most misunderstood, and the two facts are connected.
This article gives the sade sati meaning in plain terms, the three phases, which Moon signs are in it now, and what actually decides how hard it is. To calculate your own sade sati dates from your birth details, use the calculator.
What it is
Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign and about twenty-nine and a half to go round the whole zodiac. Every twenty-nine years, then, Saturn spends seven and a half of them within one sign of your natal Moon. That is sade sati. Most people live through two of them; a long life sees three.
It is counted from the Moon, not from the lagna and not from the Sun sign that Western magazines use. If you don't know your Moon sign, nothing said about sade sati applies to you until you do.
The three passages have names and characters:
The rising phase — Saturn in the twelfth from the Moon. Two and a half years of expense, loss of sleep, distance from home, and the slow removal of things you thought were fixed. The twelfth is the house of what leaves. Saturn here takes away — but it takes away first what was never load-bearing.
The peak — Saturn on the Moon. Two and a half years of pressure on the mind itself. The Moon is your emotional body; Saturn sitting on it is the experience most people mean when they say sade sati: heaviness, isolation, work without visible return, and a clarity about who is actually there for you that can be hard to receive.
The setting phase — Saturn in the second from the Moon. Two and a half years on money, family, speech, and what you have accumulated. Often the most materially demanding phase, and often the one in which what the first two phases built becomes visible.
Who is in it now
Sade sati is counted from the Moon, and read — in the Astro River reading order — with the lagna beside it, because the Moon says how Saturn is felt and the lagna what it does. With Saturn in Pisces:
- Pisces Moon — the peak. Saturn is on your Moon until June 2027, with a return between October 2027 and February 2028. Saturn Retrograde 2026 in Pisces
- Aquarius Moon — the setting phase, since March 2025. Your sade sati began in January 2020 when Saturn entered Capricorn; it ends in June 2027, with the same brief return late that year.
- Aries Moon — the rising phase, since March 2025. Saturn reaches your Moon in June 2027 and your sade sati runs until Saturn leaves Taurus at the end of May 2032.
- Capricorn Moon — you came out of it in March 2025. If the last seven years were hard, that is the reason, and it is over.
Two smaller Saturn transits belong in the same family. Saturn in the fourth from the Moon (Sagittarius Moon, now) and in the eighth from the Moon (Leo Moon, now) are the dhaiya, the two-and-a-half-year passages that the tradition ranks just below sade sati in weight.
Why it is feared, and why the fear is half wrong
Saturn is the planet of limit, delay, labour and consequence. On the Moon, the planet of feeling, it produces exactly what you would expect: the feeling of limit. That is real. People lose jobs, marriages, parents and health in sade sati, and no honest astrologer will tell you otherwise.
But the tradition also says something the fear-mongers leave out. Saturn is the planet of earned results. What sade sati removes is what was not earned — the position held by charm, the relationship held by habit, the health held by luck. What it leaves is what you built. And what it builds, in the years of labour without applause, is the structure the next twenty years stand on. The old texts call Saturn the servant who becomes the king; the king is crowned after sade sati, not during it.
Whether your sade sati is the removing kind or the building kind depends on the chart, and on three things in particular.
What decides how hard it is
Saturn's condition in your birth chart. A Saturn that is well placed at birth — in its own sign, exalted, in a kendra or the eleventh, or a yogakaraka for your lagna — gives a sade sati that presses but pays. A Saturn that is weak or badly placed gives one that presses and takes. This is the single largest factor and no general article can read it for you.
The Moon's strength. A Moon that is bright (far from the Sun), well placed, and in a good nakshatra carries the weight. A dark Moon, a Moon in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, or a Moon sitting with Saturn or Rahu at birth, feels it as crushing rather than heavy.
The dasha in force. Sade sati is a transit; the dasha is the clock. A sade sati that falls in a good Jupiter or Venus period is a demanding stretch inside a good time. One that falls in a Saturn or Rahu period, or in the period of a planet that is your lagna's enemy, is the version the stories are about. Transit and dasha are read together or not at all.
The Ashtakavarga adds a fourth. Saturn transiting a sign with high bindus — twenty-eight and above — gives results even in sade sati; over a sign with few, the same transit is friction. The birth chart carries this number for every sign, and it is one of the first things we look at when a client in sade sati asks how bad it will be.
What Saturn asks
Not worship. Not fear. Work — of a particular kind.
Finish what is open. Pay what is owed. Show up on the days you would rather not. Take the role no one else wants and do it properly. Care for the old, the ill, and the people who serve you. Sleep. Keep the body's disciplines. Say less.
That list is not moral advice dressed as astrology. It is the tradition's own account of what Saturn rewards, and the remedies prescribed for sade sati — service, discipline, the honouring of Saturn's day and Saturn's people — are the same list in ritual form.
One do, one don't
Do: during the peak phase especially, make the decisions that have a structure behind them — the long course, the slow repayment, the job with a pension and a boss you respect. Saturn funds these.
Don't: make the decisions that depend on being liked. Sade sati is a poor time to launch on charm, to marry against advice, or to quit because you feel unappreciated. You will feel unappreciated. That is the transit, not the verdict.
Questions we are asked
Is sade sati always bad? No. It is always demanding. Whether it takes or builds depends on Saturn's condition in your birth chart, your Moon's strength, and the dasha running underneath it. A strong natal Saturn in a good period gives a sade sati people look back on as the years they grew up.
Which phase of sade sati is worse? The tradition treats the peak — Saturn on the Moon — as the heaviest for the mind, and the setting phase as the heaviest for money and family. In practice it depends on which house the transited sign occupies from your lagna. Saturn crossing your eighth or twelfth from the lagna during sade sati is harder than Saturn crossing your tenth or eleventh.
When does sade sati end for Meen, Kumbh and Mesha rashi — Pisces, Aquarius and Aries Moon? Kumbh rashi (Aquarius Moon): 3 June 2027, with a short return from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028 — the true end. Meen rashi (Pisces Moon): Saturn first leaves Aries on 8 August 2029, steps back into it from 5 October 2029, and leaves for good on 17 April 2030 — so August 2029 is the first exit and April 2030 the real one. Mesha rashi (Aries Moon): 31 May 2032, when Saturn leaves Taurus. Makar rashi (Capricorn Moon): it ended on 29 March 2025. Does it apply to my Sun sign or lagna? No. Sade sati is counted from the Moon only. Saturn's transit over your lagna is a different reading, and often a lighter one.
What are the remedies? The classical remedies are service, discipline, and the honouring of Saturn's day and Saturn's people — the old, the ill, the labourer. Specific remedies are prescribed from the chart, not from an article, because a remedy for a strong Saturn is not a remedy for a weak one.
I don't know my Moon sign. How do I find it? You need your date, time and place of birth. Any accurate Vedic chart calculator, set to the Lahiri ayanamsa, will give it.
This article is for guidance and education. It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it does not replace a reading of your own chart.
If your Moon is in Aquarius, Pisces or Aries, your sade sati is running now, and how it runs depends on your Saturn, your Moon and your dasha. A consultation reads all three together, and where a remedy is called for it is prescribed to the chart, not to the transit.
