Uttara Phalguni nakshatra is the twelfth lunar mansion, from 26°40′ Leo to 10°00′ Virgo — the fourth of the nine that straddle two signs. Its deity is Aryaman, the god of contracts, patronage and the honoured guest; its symbol is the back legs of a bed; its lord is the Sun. The name means "the latter red one", the second of the Phalguni pair, and the mansion is the duty that supports Purva Phalguni's pleasure: the marriage kept, the promise honoured, the friend who stays. A person with the Moon here is reliable, generous, principled and a little formal, the one who keeps their word when it costs them.

The mansion is his, and its symbol is the back legs of the bed because the bed — the marriage, the household, the life of pleasure Purva Phalguni represents — stands on what holds it up: duty, fidelity, the unglamorous work of keeping.

The Sun as lord makes it a mansion of standing and of responsibility. The Sun in the tradition is the king, the father, the self that answers for others; Uttara Phalguni is the king at his desk rather than on his couch — the ruler who signs the treaties and pays the pensions. Its natives are the tradition's patrons and benefactors, the people others come to when they need something honoured.

Uttara Phalguni straddles two signs. Its first pada is in Leo (Simha rashi), 26°40′ to 30°00′, and its second, third and fourth padas are in Virgo (Kanya rashi), 0°00′ to 10°00′. Aryaman's mansion gives the professions of the honoured contract: law — especially contracts, marriage and property; administration, the civil service, institutional management; banking and trusteeship; and patronage in its modern forms — human resources, welfare, philanthropy. The Sun gives standing: senior positions, the head of a department or a family firm, government. The Virgo padas add the exact professions — accountancy, auditing, medicine, editing. Uttara Phalguni also does well in marriage counselling and in any work where being trusted to keep faith is the qualification.

Money. Comes through service, position and patronage, and is kept carefully. The Capricorn pada holds most; the Sagittarius pada gives most. The tradition marks the mansion as prosperous through effort rather than fortune — the Phalguni bed's back legs do the work the front legs enjoy.

Health. The Leo pada governs the heart and spine; the Virgo padas the digestion, the intestines and the nervous system. Complaints of the stomach and of the back from long sitting at duty are classical, along with the illnesses of overwork. The first prescription, in the old texts, is delegation.

Saturn in Uttara Phalguni. In an enemy's sign in Leo, a friend's in Virgo; in the mansion of its enemy the Sun. Duty as burden, or the long service honoured late: the clerk who becomes the director, the promise kept for decades. Saturn here is heavy and dependable.

Lagna in Uttara Phalguni. A well-built, upright frame, a composed face, a manner that is courteous and a little formal. In the first pada the lagna lord is the Sun; in the others, Mercury — the difference between the patron and the administrator.

Notice how much turns on the lord. A planet in one of the Sun's three mansions carries the Sun's signature, but Uttara Phalguni is not the other two, and inside Uttara Phalguni the nine sub-lords divide it again. Remedy and mantra

The classical remedy for an afflicted Uttara Phalguni placement is worship of Aryaman and of the Sun as the mansion's lord: the Sun's mantra Om Suryaya Namah at sunrise, the Aditya Hridayam, and the honouring of guests and dependents, which is Aryaman's own rite. Sunday is the mansion's day. Before any rite the tradition prescribes the keeping of one small promise a day — the mansion's affliction is the contract felt as a chain. A remedy — a puja, a gemstone, a rudraksha, a yantra — is prescribed to the chart, and the chart decides which.
