Chitra Nakshatra: The Jewel, and the Architect Who Cut It

    Astro River Institute · Published 21 September 2026, 07:00 IST · 16 min read

Chitra (also called Chithirai in Tamil, Chitta in Telugu, Chithira in Malayalam, and known in the sky as Spica) — 23°20′ Virgo to 6°40′ Libra, in Virgo and Libra; lord Mars; deity Tvashtar (Vishvakarma). Lahiri sidereal.

Chitra nakshatra is the fourteenth lunar mansion, from 23°20′ Virgo to 6°40′ Libra — the fifth of the nine that straddle two signs, and the exact middle of the zodiac. Its deity is Tvashtar, or Vishvakarma, the divine architect who makes the gods' weapons and palaces; its symbol is a bright jewel, or a pearl; its lord is Mars. In the sky it is Spica, the brightest star in Virgo. The name means "the brilliant", "the many-coloured", and the mansion is the made thing at its most beautiful: the jewel cut, the building designed, the image that dazzles. It holds the deepest degree of Venus's fall. A person with the Moon here is striking, creative, precise and a little vain, the one who makes beautiful things and wants them seen.

This is Chitra, read in the Institute's order: the two-sign span, the four padas and the navamsa each reaches — two of them vargottama — the Moon and every other planet here, the sub-lords of the Krishnamurti method, the dasha a birth here begins, and the computed sky this Moon is under in 2026–27. Each Sanskrit word is explained the first time it is used.

    The story and the symbol

Tvashtar is the craftsman of the gods — the one who forged Indra's thunderbolt, built the palaces of heaven, shaped the forms of all creatures in the womb, and made the cup from which the gods drink soma. In the later tradition he is Vishvakarma, the divine architect, patron of every builder and engineer in India. Chitra is his mansion, and the jewel is its symbol because the jewel is the craftsman's highest work: raw stone made brilliant by exactness. The mansion is the making of beauty — not beauty found, which is Rohini's, but beauty designed.

The story has an edge in it. Tvashtar's son Vishvarupa was killed by Indra, and Tvashtar in his grief made Vritra, the serpent, to avenge him; the maker's skill turned to the making of a monster. Chitra carries the caution: the brilliance that is used for display, the design that is all surface, the jewel that is paste. Mars as lord supplies the force and the vanity — Mars is the craftsman's hammer and also his competitiveness — and Mars in the signs of Mercury and Venus is Mars at the drawing board and the mirror.

Chitra straddles the exact centre of the zodiac at 0° Libra, and a planet there is at the balance point of the whole wheel. The mansion holds Venus's deepest fall at 27°00′ Virgo — beauty at its most exact and least at ease.

Which rashi is Chitra nakshatra? (Chitra nakshatra rasi)

Chitra straddles two signs. Its first and second padas are in Virgo (Kanya rashi), 23°20′ to 30°00′, and its third and fourth padas are in Libra (Tula rashi), 0°00′ to 6°40′. So a Chitra Moon in the first two padas is a Virgo Moon — Mercury-ruled, exact, analytical, serving — with Mars as star-lord giving the precision a cutting edge: this is the Chitra of the engineer and the surgeon. A Chitra Moon in the last two padas is a Libra Moon — Venus-ruled, balanced, aesthetic, relational — with Mars giving the balance a competitive drive: this is the Chitra of the architect and the designer. Mars is an enemy of Mercury and neutral to Venus, so the Libra half is the more comfortable one; the Virgo half is the sharper. Two of the padas — the second and the third — are vargottama, one in each sign, which makes Chitra unusually strong across its middle.

    The four padas of Chitra

The four padas — quarters of 3°20′ — are how a nakshatra reading gets specific; each pada belongs to one navamsa sign, the ninth divisional chart, read for what is inward and for marriage. Chitra's padas run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, with the sign boundary between the second and third and vargottama on both sides of it.

    PadaDegreesNavamsaReading
123°20′ Virgo – 26°40′ VirgoLeoLeo navamsa, in Virgo: the proud craftsman — the jeweller who signs the piece. Creative, commanding, wanting credit; the most confident pada. Holds Venus's deepest fall at 27°00′.
226°40′ Virgo – 0°00′ LibraVirgoVirgo navamsa, in Virgo: vargottama — the pure Virgo Chitra. Exactness at full strength: the engineer, the surgeon, the draughtsman; the most precise pada and the least forgiving of error.
30°00′ Libra – 3°20′ LibraLibraLibra navamsa, in Libra: vargottama — the pure Libra Chitra. Beauty and balance at full strength: the architect, the designer, the diplomat of form; the most aesthetic pada. Begins at the zodiac's centre, 0° Libra.
43°20′ Libra – 6°40′ LibraScorpioScorpio navamsa, in Libra: the hidden craftsman — the maker of secret things, the surgeon of the depths, the jeweller of the occult. The most intense pada and the one the tradition watches for Tvashtar's grief.

The two vargottama padas straddle the Virgo–Libra line and give Chitra's middle degrees a doubled strength — exactness on the Virgo side, beauty on the Libra side. The first pada holds Venus's exact debilitation and is where the mansion's beauty is most strained.

Moon in Chitra: the janma nakshatra

The janma nakshatra — the Moon's mansion at the moment of birth — is where the mind is read and the dasha is counted from. A Moon in Chitra produces a mind that designs. Here are people of striking appearance and strong visual sense, who make beautiful things and dress well and notice what is wrong with a room; who are creative in the maker's way — architecture, design, engineering, surgery, fashion, the visual arts; who are competitive, proud of their work, and easily bored. The tradition credits them with beauty, ornament, many-coloured garments, skill, and — in the harsher lines — a talkative and quarrelsome nature.

The signature underneath is Tvashtar's exactness: a Chitra Moon cannot leave a thing half-made or badly made, and holds others to the same standard. The classical warning is vanity — the jewel that wants to be admired — and the edge of Mars, which makes the criticism sharp. Their lesson is the craftsman's own: to make the thing well and let it go.

Mars in the signs of Mercury and Venus gives the mansion's people a restless drive toward the next design. They are rarely satisfied, which is why their work is good and why they are not always easy to live with.

Chitra nakshatra female and male natives

Readers search for the female and the male native separately, so the classical pair of portraits is given, with the caution that a chart is not a sex.

For a woman, the tradition gives Chitra beauty, an eye for dress and ornament, artistic and design talent, intelligence, and a pride that expects admiration; it describes her as charming, capable, sometimes sharp-tongued, and as someone who needs a field for her skill. The old texts add a caution about the marriage — that she may find fault, or be found fault with — and about vanity.

For a man, the tradition gives Chitra a handsome, well-proportioned frame, bright eyes, a talent for making and designing, ambition, and a taste for fine things; it describes him as prosperous through craft or through the professions of building, as competitive, and as inclined to quarrel over the credit. The caution is arrogance, and a restlessness that changes fields.

With both, the Virgo padas sharpen the exactness and the Libra padas soften it into charm.

    Career, money and health

Work. Tvashtar's mansion gives the professions of design and construction: architecture, civil and structural engineering, interior and industrial design, town planning; the visual arts — painting, sculpture, photography, film; jewellery, gemology, fashion, textiles — the many-coloured garments of the texts; surgery, especially cosmetic and reconstructive; and every craft that turns exactness into beauty. Mars adds the competitive professions — sport, the military, business — and the Libra padas add diplomacy and the law. Chitra also does well in advertising and in any work where the surface is the product.

Money. Comes through skill, design and the sale of beautiful things, and goes on the same. The Virgo padas keep; the Libra padas spend on beauty; the Leo pada on display. The tradition marks Chitra as prosperous through craft, and warns of the money spent to be seen.

Health. The Virgo end governs the digestion and the nerves; the Libra end the kidneys and the lower back. Complaints of the kidneys, the skin — the surface, again — and of the nerves under a perfectionist's strain are classical, along with Mars's injuries. What the tradition prescribes before medicine is to accept the flaw.

    The other planets in Chitra

Put a planet in Chitra and it takes the mansion's brilliance and Mars's edge, and adds itself to that. The sign changes the reading at the second-pada boundary.

Sun in Chitra. In a neutral sign in Virgo; debilitated in Libra — the Sun's fall is Libra, deepest at 10°, ahead in Swati, so the fall in the Libra padas is early. A self that shines through what it makes; a father who was a builder or a craftsman; authority through skill rather than birth. In Libra the ego is uncertain and the work has to prove it.

Moon in Chitra. As set out above.

Mars in Chitra. In its own mansion — the craftsman's hammer at full strength. In Virgo, in an enemy's sign, the force is exact and critical; in Libra, in a neutral sign, it is competitive and charming. The engineer's Mars, the surgeon's, the athlete who is also an artist.

Mercury in Chitra. Exalted and in its own sign in the Virgo padas, past its deepest degree in Hasta — the designer's intelligence, exact and visual. In Libra, in a friend's sign, the mind is aesthetic and diplomatic. Mars as star-lord makes the speech pointed either way.

Jupiter in Chitra. In an enemy's sign in both halves (Mercury's Virgo, Venus's Libra), but in the mansion of its friend Mars. Wisdom that builds; the teacher of design, the guru of the useful arts; grace that shows as good work. Not Jupiter's easiest placement, but a productive one.

Venus in Chitra. In the Virgo padas, debilitated — and at its deepest debilitation, 27°00′, in the first pada: beauty strained by exactness, love that criticises, the artist who cannot enjoy the work. In the Libra padas, in its own sign: the opposite — Venus at ease, the designer's Venus, beauty and balance at full strength. The two halves of Chitra hold Venus at its lowest and near its highest.

Saturn in Chitra. In a friend's sign in Virgo; exalted in Libra — Saturn's exaltation is Libra, deepest at 20°, ahead in Vishakha. The patient builder: the architect of institutions, the engineer of the long project. In Libra one of Saturn's best placements; in Virgo a disciplined, critical one.

Rahu in Chitra. The brilliance that dazzles: glamour, fame through image, the foreign design; the hunger to be seen. Rahu in Mars's mansion is the con artist and the star architect, sometimes in one career.

Ketu in Chitra. The jewel unwanted: the craftsman who does not care for credit, the beauty that is turned away from, the design that is abandoned. Often a placement of great skill with no vanity — or of a life that begins with a flaw.

Lagna in Chitra. A striking, well-made frame, bright eyes, a taste for dress, a manner that is confident and a little sharp. In the Virgo padas the lagna lord is Mercury; in Libra, Venus — the engineer and the designer.

Two people with the Moon in Chitra can have nothing else in common: one has it in the first pada under the Mars sub, the other in the fourth under Mercury's, and the same star gives them different minds, different dashas, different marriages. The paragraphs above are the mansion; the person is the combination. A nakshatra report reads that combination for your chart — every planet's nakshatra, pada and sub-lord, and the dasha the Moon starts — so that what this page says in general becomes what is true of you.

    The sub-lords of Chitra

This is the level at which the Krishnamurti method (KP) reads a chart: each nakshatra is cut into nine unequal parts in the proportion of the Vimshottari years, and the lord of the part — the sub-lord — decides what a planet here actually delivers. Two planets in Chitra with different sub-lords give different results. It is the step at which two charts that look alike come apart — where real astrology begins.

    Sub-lordFromTo

    Moon5°33′20″ Libra6°40′ Libra

Chitra's sub-lords: the three that change a reading. The Mars sub at the start (23°20′ to 24°06′40″ Virgo) is Mars in its own mansion and its own sub — the sharpest, most competitive degrees of the star. The Saturn sub (27°53′20″ Virgo to 0°00′ Libra) ends on the zodiac's centre and sits just past Venus's deepest fall at 27°00′; a planet there is the exact craftsman at the balance point. The Venus sub (2°40′ to 4°53′20″ Libra) is Venus in its own sign in the vargottama Libra pada, and it is where Chitra's beauty is most at ease — the designer's degrees, and the mansion's kindest.

The dasha the Moon here gives

A Moon in Chitra starts life in the Mars mahadasha (7 years), and the balance left at birth is the fraction of Chitra the Moon has still to cross, times 7: a Moon exactly halfway through Chitra has 3.5 years of Mars left. The order after that is fixed — Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon — and it is the same for everyone born with the Moon here; what differs is where in it a life is standing at any moment. A Chitra life begins in the seven-year Mars mahadasha, and since most Chitra Moons are born partway through the mansion, Mars usually ends in early childhood — an active, competitive beginning, sometimes with an injury in it. Then the eighteen-year Rahu, which typically covers the school years and the twenties: the long ambition, the training in a craft, often abroad. Jupiter's sixteen years usually arrive in the thirties and bring the commissions.

Chitra nakshatra compatibility and marriage life

Compatibility by nakshatra is read from the yoni (the animal), the gana (the temperament) and the nadi (the constitution, which must differ). Chitra is tiger yoni, rakshasa gana, madhya nadi.

Best matches by yoni — the tiger, whose other mansion is Vishakha (full marks); the serpent (Rohini, Mrigashira) and the rat (Magha, Purva Phalguni) score two with the tiger, and every other animal scores one. Most difficult by yoni — the cow (Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Bhadrapada), the tiger's enemy, scoring nothing.

By gana — Chitra is rakshasa, which matches rakshasa best (Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Vishakha, Jyeshta, Mula, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha) and manushya acceptably; rakshasa with deva is the classical mismatch.

By nadi — Chitra is madhya nadi. Chitra with Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta or Uttara Bhadrapada carries the classical nadi dosha.

Beyond the koota count: a Chitra native is a striking, creative, demanding partner who needs to be admired for what they make, and needs one who can say "it's beautiful" and mean it — and who can bear being redesigned.

Which pada of Chitra is best, and which is difficult?

What the question means in practice is: which pada carries the difficulty. For Chitra the tradition's answer is the first pada, in the Leo navamsa — not for the navamsa but because it holds Venus's deepest fall at 27°00′ Virgo, and a Venus there, or a Moon there for matters of love and art, is beauty at its most strained. The second and third padas, both vargottama, are the strongest — exactness and beauty each at full strength. The fourth, in Scorpio, is the one that carries Tvashtar's grief, the skill turned to darker uses, and needs the rest of the chart to hold it.

The sky for Chitra Moons in 2026–27

Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri, true node — computed, as every dated claim on this site is. What that means: a Chitra Moon in the Virgo padas has Saturn in the seventh from the Moon until June 2027, then the eighth, where the ashtama Shani begins; Jupiter in the eleventh until 31 October, previewing the twelfth until 25 January; Rahu in the sixth and Ketu in the twelfth until 25 November, then the fifth and the eleventh — and Venus retrograde on the Virgo Moon from 6 to 22 November, turning direct at 28°38′, inside Chitra's own first pada, on 14 November. A Chitra Moon in the Libra padas has Saturn in the sixth until June 2027, then the seventh; Jupiter in the tenth until 31 October — the house of work — previewing the eleventh until 25 January and returning to the tenth until June 2027; Rahu in the fifth and Ketu in the eleventh until 25 November, then the fourth and the tenth. For the Libra padas Venus is retrograde on the Moon from 3 October to 6 November, turning back into Chitra itself on 24 October — the mansion's own lord walking backward through it. Mars, Chitra's lord, enters Leo on 12 November: the twelfth from a Virgo Moon, the eleventh from a Libra Moon.

    Remedy and mantra

The classical remedy for an afflicted Chitra placement is worship of Vishvakarma — the divine architect, honoured by every builder on Vishvakarma Puja day — and of Mars as the mansion's lord, with Om Angarakaya Namah or the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesday. Coral is Mars's stone and Chitra's, prescribed only where the chart allows. The plainest remedy, and the first, is to finish the work and sign it — the mansion's affliction is the jewel that is never done, or the credit quarrelled over. A remedy — a puja, a gemstone, a rudraksha, a yantra — is prescribed to the chart, and the chart decides which.

    Questions we are asked

What is Chitra nakshatra? The fourteenth of the 27 nakshatras, from 23°20′ Virgo to 6°40′ Libra, ruled by Mars, with Tvashtar — Vishvakarma, the divine architect — as deity and a bright jewel as symbol. In the sky it is Spica. It stands for design, craft, beauty made by exactness, and the desire to be seen.

Chitra nakshatra is which rashi? Two. The first and second padas are in Virgo (Kanya); the third and fourth are in Libra (Tula). The pada decides.

Who is the lord of Chitra nakshatra? Mars. The dasha for a Moon here begins with Mars's seven years, then Rahu's eighteen.

What are the Chitra nakshatra characteristics? Striking, creative, exact, competitive, visually gifted, proud of its work; the architect, the designer, the surgeon; vain when unchecked.

Which pada of Chitra is bad? None for everyone. The first holds Venus's deepest fall at 27° Virgo and strains the mansion's beauty; the second and third are vargottama and the strongest.

What is the Chitra nakshatra symbol? A bright jewel — or a pearl — the craftsman's highest work: raw stone made brilliant.

Is Chitra nakshatra good for marriage? Striking, demanding, creative partners. Match by yoni (tiger), gana (rakshasa) and nadi (madhya); the tiger–cow pairing is the match the table rates worst.

What does 2026 hold for Chitra nakshatra? It depends on the pada: Virgo-pada Moons have Saturn in the seventh and Venus retrograde on the Moon from 6 to 22 November; Libra-pada Moons have Saturn in the sixth and Venus retrograde on the Moon from 3 October to 6 November. The computed sky for both is above.

Educational only; not medical, legal or financial advice. A nakshatra is one thread of a chart, not the cloth.
