Mrigashira (also called Mrigasheersham in Tamil, Mrigasira in Telugu, Makayiram in Malayalam) — 23°20′ Taurus to 6°40′ Gemini, in Taurus and Gemini; lord Mars; deity Soma. Lahiri sidereal.
Mrigashira nakshatra is the fifth lunar mansion, from 23°20′ Taurus to 6°40′ Gemini — the second of the nine that straddle two signs. Its deity is Soma, the Moon-god and the nectar; its symbol is a deer's head; its lord is Mars. The name means "the deer's head", and the mansion is the deer itself: alert, curious, beautiful, easily startled, always looking for the thing just over the next rise. A person with the Moon here is a seeker — of knowledge, of pleasure, of the right partner, of the right place — and the whole art of the placement is learning what a search is for.
The page walks Mrigashira through in full: the two-sign span, the four padas and the navamsa each reaches, the Moon and every other planet here, the sub-lords of the Krishnamurti method, the dasha a birth here begins, and the computed sky this Moon is under in 2026–27. Terms in Sanskrit are explained where they arise.

The story and the symbol
Soma is the drink of the gods and the god of the drink — the nectar that gives immortality, and also the Moon, which holds it and is drunk down by the gods over the dark fortnight and refilled by the Sun over the bright one. Mrigashira is Soma's mansion, and everything in it is about the pursuit of what satisfies: the deer that scents the water, the seeker who scents the truth, the lover who scents the beloved.
The deer's head is the star itself — the small triangle at the top of Orion, which the ancients saw as a stag — and its story is the oldest in the sky. Prajapati, the creator, took the form of a deer to pursue his own daughter, Rohini, the mansion just before this one; Rudra, the hunter, shot him, and the arrow and the fleeing deer are both still up there. Mrigashira is the pursuit; Ardra, the next mansion, is Rudra's. The tradition keeps the story because it says something true about the mansion: the search is beautiful and it can go wrong, and the thing pursued is often the thing one should have left alone.
Mars as lord is the surprise. The deer is soft — the mansion's nature is mridu, gentle — but the hunt is not, and Mars supplies the restlessness, the drive, and the willingness to go after what is wanted. A Mrigashira native is gentle in manner and relentless in pursuit. The two halves do not always know about each other.
Which rashi is Mrigashira nakshatra? (Mrigashira nakshatra rasi)
Mrigashira straddles two signs. Its first and second padas are in Taurus (Vrishabha or Vrishabh rashi), 23°20′ to 30°00′, and its third and fourth padas are in Gemini (Mithuna or Mithun rashi), 0°00′ to 6°40′. So the answer to "which rashi" is the pada's. A Moon in the first two padas is a Taurus Moon — exalted, Venus-ruled, settled, sensual — with Mars as star-lord giving it an appetite and a search; this is the Mrigashira that hunts for beauty and comfort. A Moon in the last two is a Gemini Moon — Mercury-ruled, airy, mutable, curious — with Mars as star-lord giving it drive; this is the Mrigashira that hunts for knowledge and conversation. The Taurus half is the deer at the water; the Gemini half is the deer on the move. Mars and Venus are neutral to each other, Mars and Mercury are not friends, so the Gemini half has more friction in it and more speed.
The four padas of Mrigashira
Each pada is a quarter of the mansion, 3°20′, and carries the sign of the navamsa, the ninth division, in which the inner life and the marriage are read. Mrigashira's padas run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, with the sign boundary between the second and third.
| Pada | Degrees | Navamsa | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 23°20′ Taurus – 26°40′ Taurus | Leo | Leo navamsa, in Taurus: the proud seeker — creative, warm, wanting to be admired for what it finds. The most confident pada; the artist and the performer. |
| 2 | 26°40′ Taurus – 0°00′ Gemini | Virgo | Virgo navamsa, in Taurus: the careful seeker — exact, analytical, the researcher who checks. Includes the Taurus–Gemini boundary at its end. The steadiest pada, and the best for money. |
| 3 | 0°00′ Gemini – 3°20′ Gemini | Libra | Libra navamsa, in Gemini: the relational seeker — the mansion's search turned to partnership. Charming, sociable, artistic; the pada that looks for the beloved and is least able to be alone. |
| 4 | 3°20′ Gemini – 6°40′ Gemini | Scorpio | Scorpio navamsa, in Gemini: the deep seeker — the search turned to the hidden. Investigation, occult study, intense attachments; the most suspicious pada and the most perceptive. |
No pada of Mrigashira is vargottama. The Taurus padas hold the Moon exalted; the Gemini padas hold Mercury in its own sign. The tradition reads the first two as the more settled and the last two as the more searching.
Moon in Mrigashira: the janma nakshatra
A birth is dated by its janma nakshatra, the Moon's mansion; the mind takes its colour from it and the dasha its starting point. A Moon in Mrigashira gives a mind that looks. These are people whose attention moves — to a new subject, a new place, a new face — and who are happiest when there is something to find. They are curious, quick, sociable, often physically graceful with the deer's alert eyes, and they have a gift for pleasure that Soma gives and Mars sharpens. In the classical descriptions they have a fickle mind, a fondness for enjoyment, timidity, eloquence, and wealth.
The deeper current is the pursuit. A Mrigashira Moon is rarely content with what it has, not out of greed but because the finding was the point; and the same restlessness that makes them good researchers, travellers and lovers makes them hard to settle. What the texts warn of is suspicion — the deer's readiness to bolt — and the mansion's people can leave a good thing because they scented a threat that was not there. The native's work is to learn that some things are found by stopping.
Soma's presence gives them a softness under the search: they are kind, and they do not like to hurt, and they are hurt easily themselves. Mars's lordship gives them the nerve to go after what the softness wants.
Mrigashira nakshatra female and male natives
The texts split the description by sex; both halves are kept, as readers want them, and note that a chart is not a sex.
For a woman, the tradition gives Mrigashira grace, large expressive eyes, a quick wit and a love of the arts; it describes her as sociable, warm, quick to attach and quick to doubt, and as someone who needs to be given room to explore. The old texts' caution is about suspicion in marriage — the deer's habit of sensing danger — and about restlessness that reads as inconstancy.
For a man, the tradition gives Mrigashira a slim, alert frame, charm, curiosity, a taste for pleasure and for company, and an ability to talk his way in anywhere. He is described as a seeker who changes fields or partners more than once before he settles, and as generous when settled. The caution is about the chase becoming the habit.
For both, the pada does much of the work: the Taurus padas settle sooner; the Gemini padas seek longer.
Career, money and health
Work. The search gives research of every kind — science, scholarship, investigation, journalism, exploration; the deer gives grace — dance, music, acting, fashion; Soma gives pleasure — perfume, wine, hospitality, the arts of enjoyment; Mars gives the hunt — sales, marketing, recruitment, real-estate scouting, anything that finds and pursues. Mrigashira also does well in travel, in trade, and in any field that rewards curiosity over persistence.
Money. Comes through cleverness and connection and goes on pleasure and movement. The Virgo pada saves; the Leo pada spends on show; the Gemini padas trade. The tradition marks Mrigashira as a mansion of wealth when the search is disciplined, and of scattered means when it is not.
Health. The Taurus end governs the face and throat; the Gemini end the shoulders, arms, hands and lungs. The classical complaints are of the throat and the nerves, and a restlessness that does not let the body rest; the Mars lordship adds cuts and fevers.
The other planets in Mrigashira
A planet in Mrigashira takes on the mansion's search and Soma's pleasure, then Mars's drive, then its own nature. The sign changes the reading at the second-pada boundary.
Sun in Mrigashira. In an enemy's sign in the Taurus padas and a neutral one in the Gemini padas, so the Gemini half is the easier one for the Sun. A self that seeks recognition through what it discovers; a father who was restless or travelled. Authority earned by finding what others missed.
Moon in Mrigashira. See above. Exalted in the Taurus padas.
Mars in Mrigashira. In its own mansion — the hunter at full strength. In Taurus, in a neutral sign, the pursuit is of beauty and property; in Gemini, in an enemy's sign, of ideas and arguments, with sharper words. Courage, appetite, and a temper that is quick because the deer startles.
Mercury in Mrigashira. In its own sign for the Gemini padas — a quick, searching, eloquent mind, the researcher and the writer. In the Taurus padas, in a friend's sign, the mind is slower and more sensual. Mars as star-lord makes the speech pointed either way.
Jupiter in Mrigashira. In an enemy's sign in both halves (Venus's Taurus, Mercury's Gemini), but in its friend Mars's mansion. Wisdom found by searching rather than by faith; the scholar, the guru who travelled. Good for higher learning, uneven for settled belief.
Venus in Mrigashira. In its own sign in the Taurus padas — pleasure, beauty and love pursued with Mars's drive; the lover, the artist, the connoisseur. In Gemini, in a friend's sign, the pleasure is in conversation and variety. One of the more romantic Venus placements, and one of the least constant.
Saturn in Mrigashira. In a friend's sign in both halves. The search disciplined: the patient researcher, the long investigation, the slow finding. Saturn steadies the deer and can also freeze it — the person who looks and never chooses.
Rahu in Mrigashira. The search without a floor: the compulsive seeker, the foreign quest, the pursuit of pleasure to excess. Rahu here is often the scientist obsessed, or the wanderer who cannot go home.
Ketu in Mrigashira. The search abandoned, or completed before this life: the person who already knows where the water is and does not need to look. Detachment from pleasure; sometimes a life that begins with a loss of the beloved.
Lagna in Mrigashira. A slim, alert body, quick movements, expressive eyes, a manner that is friendly and slightly watchful. In the Taurus padas the lagna lord is Venus; in Gemini, Mercury — the difference between a deer at rest and a deer in motion.
Two people with the Moon in Mrigashira can have nothing else in common: one has it in the first pada under the Mars sub, the other in the fourth under Mercury's, and the same star gives them different minds, different dashas, different marriages. The paragraphs above are the mansion; the person is the combination. A nakshatra report reads that combination for your chart — every planet's nakshatra, pada and sub-lord, and the dasha the Moon starts — so that what this page says in general becomes what is true of you.
The sub-lords of Mrigashira
This is the level at which the Krishnamurti method (KP) reads a chart: each nakshatra is cut into nine unequal parts in the proportion of the Vimshottari years, and the lord of the part — the sub-lord — decides what a planet here actually delivers. Two planets in Mrigashira with different sub-lords give different results. It is the step at which two charts that look alike come apart — where real astrology begins.
| Sub-lord | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| Mars | 23°20′ Taurus | 24°06′40″ Taurus |
| Rahu | 24°06′40″ Taurus | 26°06′40″ Taurus |
| Jupiter | 26°06′40″ Taurus | 27°53′20″ Taurus |
| Saturn | 27°53′20″ Taurus | 0°00′ Gemini |
| Mercury | 0°00′ Gemini | 1°53′20″ Gemini |
| Ketu | 1°53′20″ Gemini | 2°40′ Gemini |
| Venus | 2°40′ Gemini | 4°53′20″ Gemini |
| Sun | 4°53′20″ Gemini | 5°33′20″ Gemini |
| Moon | 5°33′20″ Gemini | 6°40′ Gemini |
Three sub-lords of Mrigashira to read first. The Mars sub at the start (23°20′ to 24°06′40″ Taurus) is Mars in its own mansion and its own sub, in Taurus: the hunt at its most physical and most possessive. The Saturn sub (27°53′20″ Taurus to 0°00′ Gemini) ends exactly on the sign boundary, and a planet there is the disciplined seeker standing at the door between the settled half and the moving half. The Venus sub (2°40′ to 4°53′20″ Gemini) is the widest part of the Gemini half and where the mansion's charm and its romantic search are strongest.
The dasha the Moon here gives
A Moon in Mrigashira starts life in the Mars mahadasha (7 years), and the balance left at birth is the fraction of Mrigashira the Moon has still to cross, times 7: a Moon exactly halfway through Mrigashira has 3.5 years of Mars left. The order after that is fixed — Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon — and it is the same for everyone born with the Moon here; what differs is where in it a life is standing at any moment. A Mrigashira life begins in the seven-year Mars mahadasha, and since most Moons here are born partway through, Mars usually ends in early childhood — a childhood the tradition expects to be active and sometimes marked by an injury or a move. Then the eighteen-year Rahu, which typically covers the school years and the twenties: the long search, often abroad or in a field the family did not expect. Jupiter's sixteen years usually arrive in the thirties and bring the finding.
Mrigashira nakshatra compatibility and marriage life
The match is made on three counts: the yoni (the animal), the gana (the temperament) and the nadi (the constitution, which must differ). Mrigashira is serpent yoni, deva gana, madhya nadi.
Best matches by yoni — the serpent, whose other mansion is Rohini (full marks); then the horse (Ashwini, Shatabhisha), the elephant (Bharani, Revati) and the sheep (Krittika, Pushya), each scoring three with the serpent. Most difficult by yoni — the mongoose (Uttara Ashadha), the serpent's enemy, scoring nothing; the cat, rat, cow and buffalo score one.
By gana — Mrigashira is deva, which matches deva and manushya well; deva with rakshasa is the classical mismatch. Mrigashira with Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana and Revati is deva to deva.
By nadi — Mrigashira is madhya nadi. Mrigashira with Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta or Uttara Bhadrapada is what the tradition calls nadi dosha.
After the tables comes the part that matters: a Mrigashira native needs a partner who is interesting enough to keep being found, and who does not read the deer's watchfulness as distrust.
Which pada of Mrigashira is best, and which is difficult?
Asked plainly, the question is where the trouble sits. The tradition's answer for Mrigashira is the fourth pada, in the Scorpio navamsa — not because it is weak but because the search turns suspicious there, and a Moon in it can spend a life looking for the threat. The second pada is the steadiest and best for money; the first the most confident; the third, in Libra, the most charming and the least able to be alone. There is no pada of Mrigashira that is bad for everyone; there is one that needs to be told the water is safe.
The sky for Mrigashira Moons in 2026–27
Dates computed, not remembered: Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, true node. To say it directly: a Mrigashira Moon in the Taurus padas is not in sade sati — Saturn is in the eleventh from the Moon until June 2027, the house of gains, and then in the twelfth, where the next sade sati's opening phase begins; Jupiter is in the third from that Moon for most of the year and previews the fourth from 31 October to 25 January; Rahu is in the tenth and Ketu in the fourth until 25 November, then the ninth and the third. A Mrigashira Moon in the Gemini padas has Saturn in the tenth until June 2027, then the eleventh — work, then gain; Jupiter in the second from the Moon for most of the year, the house of money and family, with a preview of the third from 31 October to 25 January; Rahu in the ninth and Ketu in the third until 25 November, then Rahu in the eighth and Ketu in the second. Mars — Mrigashira's own lord — enters Leo on 12 November: the fourth from a Taurus Moon, the third from a Gemini Moon, and meets Jupiter and Ketu there in the week that follows.

Remedy and mantra
The classical remedy for an afflicted Mrigashira placement is worship of Soma — in practice, of the Moon — and of Mars as the mansion's lord: the Moon's mantra Om Somaya Namah on Monday and Mars's Om Angarakaya Namah on Tuesday, and the offering of white flowers and of water, which the deer seeks. Chandrashekhara, Shiva with the Moon in his hair, is worshipped for the mansion's grace. Before the mantra comes stillness — a discipline of staying, since the mansion's affliction is the leaving. A remedy — a puja, a gemstone, a rudraksha, a yantra — is prescribed to the chart, and the chart decides which.
Questions we are asked
What is Mrigashira nakshatra? The fifth of the 27 nakshatras, from 23°20′ Taurus to 6°40′ Gemini, ruled by Mars, with Soma as deity and a deer's head as symbol. It stands for the search — for knowledge, pleasure, and the beloved.
Mrigashira nakshatra is which rashi? Two. The first and second padas are in Taurus (Vrishabha or Vrishabh); the third and fourth are in Gemini (Mithuna or Mithun). The pada decides.
Who is the lord of Mrigashira nakshatra? Mars. The dasha for a Moon here begins with Mars's seven years, then Rahu's eighteen.
What are the Mrigashira nakshatra characteristics? Curious, restless, graceful, sociable, quick, pleasure-loving, suspicious when startled; a seeker in every field.
Which pada of Mrigashira is bad? None for everyone. The fourth, in Scorpio, is the most suspicious; the second is the steadiest and the best for money.
What is the Mrigashira nakshatra symbol? A deer's head — the small triangle at the top of Orion, the stag in the oldest story of the sky.
Is Mrigashira nakshatra good for marriage? Warm, charming, attentive partners who need room to explore. Match by yoni (serpent), gana (deva) and nadi (madhya); the serpent–mongoose pairing is the pair the yoni count marks at nothing.
What does 2026 hold for Mrigashira nakshatra? It depends on the pada: Taurus-pada Moons have Saturn in the eleventh until June 2027; Gemini-pada Moons have it in the tenth. Mars, the mansion's lord, meets Jupiter and Ketu in Leo in mid-November. The computed sky for both is above.
This page teaches; it does not advise on health, law or money. A nakshatra is one line in a chart, not the chart.
The reading of your own Mrigashira — Moon, lagna, sub-lord and dasha at once — is a consultation, not a page, and it comes with the remedy if one is called for.
