Jupiter Enters Leo 2026: The Last Weeks of an Exalted Year

    Astro River Institute · Published 21 September 2026, 07:00 IST · 8 min read

Lahiri sidereal, IST. Jupiter in Cancer from 2 June 2026; enters Leo 31 October 2026; retrograde from 13 December; back into Cancer 25 January 2027; direct 13 April 2027; into Leo for good on 26 June 2027.

The Jupiter transit of 2026 has a turn in it that most forecasts miss. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. Of all the placements in the zodiac this is one of the few the tradition calls simply good — the teacher in the house of the mother, wisdom with a roof over it, the planet of increase in the sign of nourishment. Jupiter has been there since June. It leaves on 31 October.

But not for long. Jupiter turns retrograde in December, backs into Cancer in late January, and only leaves Cancer for the last time on 26 June 2027. So what begins on 31 October is not the end of the exalted year. It is a preview of the next one — a first look at Jupiter in Leo, three months long, before the planet returns to finish its business in the Moon's sign.

That shape matters. Read the two dates as one story.

What Jupiter in Cancer has been doing

Since June, Jupiter has crossed Punarvasu, Pushya and — since 19 August — Ashlesha. The Pushya stretch was the heart of it: Jupiter in the nakshatra ruled by Saturn, presided over by Brihaspati, Jupiter's own deity. The tradition calls Pushya the most auspicious of the twenty-seven, and Jupiter exalted within it is the placement muhurta astrologers wait years for. If you started something between mid-June and mid-August that felt unusually well-supported, that is why.

Since August Jupiter has been in Ashlesha, Mercury's mansion, the coiled serpent — exalted still, but the wisdom has turned inward and strategic. Insight that arrives quietly. Understanding of what was hidden. Mars has been alongside since 18 September, and the pair share Cancer until Jupiter leaves.

31 October — into Leo, into Magha

Jupiter enters Leo at about 12:02 IST (06:32 UTC) on 31 October and, at the same moment, enters Magha — Ketu's mansion, the Pitris' throne. Leo is the Sun's sign; Jupiter and the Sun are natural friends, and Jupiter in Leo is a strong, dignified placement even without exaltation. Magha adds the ancestors: authority that is inherited, the father's house, the throne one is answerable for.

Ketu is already there, in the first degrees of Leo, and Jupiter meets it on 12 November at 1°18′ Leo (true node) — a fortnight before Ketu leaves Leo for Cancer on 25 November. Jupiter with Ketu in Ketu's own mansion is wisdom that arrives by subtraction: the understanding that comes from letting something go. Four days after that meeting Mars joins them.

The turn from exalted-in-the-mother's-sign to strong-in-the-father's is the whole flavour of the ingress. Jupiter stops nourishing and starts presiding. What was protected in Cancer is expected to stand on its own in Leo.

Three months of this — 31 October to 25 January — then Jupiter withdraws to finish the Cancer year, and comes back to Leo in June 2027 for a full stay.

Who feels the change most — all twelve lagnas

Count where Cancer has been and where Leo now falls. Then read the same line for your Moon sign — the double read, from the lagna for events and from the Moon for how they are felt, is how every Astro River forecast is written.

LagnaCancer was yourLeo is yourThe turn
Aries4th5thFrom home and mother to children, learning and love. Jupiter in the fifth is one of its best transits — and Leo is Aries's own trine.
Taurus3rd4thFrom effort to comfort: property, vehicles, the mother's wellbeing, peace at home.
Gemini2nd3rdFrom money and family to writing, siblings and short journeys. Jupiter in the third is modest; the gain is in courage.
Cancer1st2ndThe exalted year on your lagna moves to money, speech and family. Bank the understanding.
Leo12th1stGuru arrives on your lagna. Health, standing, marriage prospects and general fortune lift. The three-month preview is your notice; the full stay comes in June 2027.
Virgo11th12thFrom gains to expense and retreat. Jupiter in the twelfth is not bad — it protects, and it favours the spiritual and the foreign — but the income phase pauses.
Libra10th11thFrom career to its rewards: income, friends, elder siblings. Jupiter in the eleventh is the classical placement for gain.
Scorpio9th10thFrom faith and the father to career and public standing. Jupiter on the tenth raises the profile; use it.
Sagittarius8th9thFrom the hidden to the open: Jupiter, your lagna lord, enters your ninth — fortune, dharma, the teacher. The largest improvement in the zodiac.
Capricorn7th8thThe one placement the tradition treats with caution. Jupiter in the eighth brings hidden costs, others' money, and the need to read every clause. Not danger; diligence.
Aquarius6th7thFrom service and dispute to partnership, marriage and the public. A good turn.
Pisces5th6thFrom children and love to work, health and debt. Jupiter in the sixth is not comfortable, but it clears debts and defeats rivals.

The trine placements — first, fifth and ninth, for Leo, Aries and Sagittarius lagnas — are where Jupiter gives most freely. The sixth, eighth and twelfth, for Pisces, Capricorn and Virgo, are where it gives less and asks more.

This transit, in your chart. The table above is by lagna alone. A personal transit report reads Jupiter's move from Cancer to Leo against your full chart — both houses from lagna and Moon, your natal Jupiter, the dasha running through the preview and the return, and your Ashtakavarga counts for Cancer and Leo — and tells you what the exalted year gave you and what the Leo preview asks.

The classical rules behind the reading

Exaltation. Jupiter's exaltation sign is Cancer, its deepest exaltation at 5°. The tradition reads an exalted planet as giving its results in their fullest and most beneficial form. Jupiter's own signs — Sagittarius and Pisces — are the next best, and Leo, the sign of its natural friend the Sun, is a strong placement without being exalted.

Retrogression and the return. A slow planet that enters a sign and then retrogrades back out is said to give a preview of the new sign and then to complete unfinished business in the old. The tradition reads the first entry as a promise and the final entry, after the retrograde, as the delivery. That is why this forecast treats 31 October as the first of two Leo entries, not as the ingress.

Transit from Moon and lagna. Jupiter's transit is classically read from the Moon — Jupiter in the second, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh from the Moon is favourable — and modern practice adds the lagna. Where the two readings disagree, the Moon governs the mind's experience and the lagna the events.

Nakshatra. Leo's first mansion is Magha, Ketu's, and Jupiter stays in it for the whole three-month preview. The inherited, the ancestral, the father's line — that is the colour of this Jupiter, and it is not the colour of Jupiter in Leo generally.

    The Ashtakavarga check

Jupiter gives what the ground allows. Look at your Sarvashtakavarga count for Leo. Twenty-eight or more, and this ingress delivers even in an otherwise ordinary period. Under twenty-five, and Jupiter in Leo will feel like a promise more than a payment — which is still useful, because the promise returns in June 2027 to be kept.

    → Ashtakavarga

    One do, one don't

Do: use the last fortnight of Jupiter in Ashlesha — mid-October to the 31st — to close the year's private understandings: the decision you've reached but not announced, the study you've finished but not written up. Ashlesha finishes things in silence.

Don't: treat the 31 October ingress as a permanent shift. It is a three-month preview. Anything that begins under Jupiter in Leo this winter will be revisited when Jupiter retreats into Cancer in late January. Start it if it can survive a second look.

    Questions we are asked

Is 31 October the start of Jupiter in Leo? The first start. Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October, retreats to Cancer on 25 January 2027, and enters Leo for its full stay on 26 June 2027. Treat this winter as a preview.

Is Jupiter still exalted? Until 31 October, yes, and again from 25 January to 26 June 2027. In Leo it is strong and dignified, not exalted.

Which lagnas gain most? Leo, Sagittarius and Aries — Jupiter on their first, ninth and fifth. Libra and Scorpio also gain, on the eleventh and tenth.

Which should be careful? Capricorn, with Jupiter on the eighth. Virgo and Pisces, on the twelfth and sixth, less so.

Should I start something on 31 October? Only if it can survive being revisited in January. The muhurta answer is that the June 2027 entry is the better one for a foundation; the October entry is for preparation.

This reading is for guidance and education. It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it does not replace a reading of your own chart.

Jupiter's year in Cancer has one more chapter after this preview. If you want to know how the exalted transit has landed in your chart, and what its return in January asks of you, that is a consultation question.
