Mars in Cancer 2026: Force Without a Front Door

Lahiri sidereal, IST. Mars in Cancer from 18 September (16:36 IST, 11:06 UTC) to 12 November 2026 (20:18 IST, 14:48 UTC).

Mars transits Cancer from 18 September to 12 November 2026 — the Mars in Cancer transit of this year, sidereal. Mars does not like Cancer. The tradition calls this his debilitation — the sign where his nature is least at home — and it is easy to read that as a verdict. It is not. It is a description of style.

Mars is the planet of direct force: the soldier, the surgeon, the door kicked open. Cancer is the Moon's sign — the home, the mother, the tide that does not argue but simply rises. Put Mars here and the force does not vanish. It loses its front door. It comes in sideways: through mood rather than command, through protection rather than conquest, through the quiet resentment of a person who is doing everything for everyone and has stopped saying so.

For the next eight weeks that is the texture of the sky.

    What softens it

Mars is not alone in Cancer. Jupiter has been there since June, exalted — Cancer is the sign where Jupiter is most himself — and the two share the sign until Jupiter moves on to Leo on 31 October. The classical texts list the presence of the planet exalted in a debilitation sign as one of the conditions that cancel a debilitation, and the practical reading matches: while Jupiter is present, Mars in Cancer tends to act as protective force rather than as pent-up temper. Guard what you love; don't go looking for a fight about it.

From 31 October to 12 November Mars has Cancer to himself. Those two weeks are where the indirect friction is most likely to surface.

    The three passages

Mars crosses three nakshatras on the way through, and each changes his voice.

18–24 September — Punarvasu. Jupiter's mansion. Mars is in its last quarter, the fourth pada, which is the part of Punarvasu that lies in Cancer. Mars enters under Jupiter's hand, in the sign where Jupiter is exalted. The gentlest week of the transit: energy toward repair, return, second attempts.

24 September – 17 October — Pushya (from 05:41 IST on the 24th). Saturn's mansion, and the most nourishing of the twenty-seven. Mars under Saturn's discipline in the Moon's sign: work done for the household, for the institution, for the long term. Effort that does not show yet. This is the working stretch of the transit, and the best of it.

17 October – 12 November — Ashlesha (from 12:46 IST on the 17th). Mercury's mansion, the coiled serpent. Mars here is strategic, hidden, and easily wounded. Jupiter leaves on 31 October, midway through. Watch for the argument that has been avoided for a month finally being had — and for the temptation to win it by means you would not admit to.

Where it lands — all twelve lagnas

Cancer is a different house for every chart. Find your lagna, then read the same line again for your Moon sign — the double read, which is how every Astro River forecast is written — because Mars's effect on the mind comes from the Moon and its effect on events from the lagna.

LagnaCancer is yourThe eight weeks tend toward
Aries4thHome, mother, property, vehicles. Repairs and arguments under the same roof. The best transit for fixing the house; the worst for buying one in a hurry.
Taurus3rdSiblings, short journeys, effort, courage. Energy for the small campaign; friction with a brother or a neighbour.
Gemini2ndMoney, family, speech. Sharp words at the table; spending on the household. Watch the tongue.
Cancer1stThe body and the temper. Heat, irritability, sudden resolves. Guard health and hold decisions.
Leo12thExpense, sleep, distance, what leaves. Money goes quietly; rest is disturbed. Good for a retreat, poor for a launch.
Virgo11thGains, friends, elders. One of the better placements — Mars in the eleventh brings income through effort — though a friendship may turn competitive.
Libra10thWork, authority, the boss. Force at the office that arrives sideways: pressure from above that is never quite stated. Do the work; don't fight the manager.
Scorpio9thFather, teacher, faith, long journeys. Mars is your lagna lord here, so the transit is personal: a matter of principle, or a matter with the father.
Sagittarius8thHidden things, the body's vulnerabilities, others' money. The transit to treat with most care — avoid surgery that can wait, and read every clause.
Capricorn7thThe partner, the public, open rivals. What goes unspoken between two people who share a bed. Speak before it curdles.
Aquarius6thEnemies, illness, service, debt. Mars in the sixth is strong — it defeats rivals — but at the cost of heat in the body. A good stretch for clearing a debt or a dispute.
Pisces5thChildren, romance, intelligence, speculation. Passion, and the temptation to gamble on it. Keep the money out of the mood.

The kendra placements — first, fourth, seventh and tenth, for Cancer, Aries, Capricorn and Libra lagnas — feel it most, because a kendra puts the planet in front of you. The sixth and eleventh, for Aquarius and Virgo, are where a malefic transit does its useful work.

The sky condition is shared. The house is yours.

This transit, in your chart. The table above is by lagna alone. A personal transit report reads Mars in Cancer against your full chart — the house it falls in from lagna and Moon, your natal Mars and its nakshatra, the dasha running, and your Ashtakavarga count for Cancer — and tells you which of the eight weeks matters for you and why.

The classical rules behind the reading

Three things from the tradition are doing the work in this forecast, and a reader who wants to check them should know what they are.

Debilitation is a condition, not a curse. A planet in its neecha sign is a planet whose natural mode is unsupported by the sign's nature. Mars wants to act directly; Cancer offers no direct road. The classical texts read the debilitated planet as giving its results in a reduced, indirect or delayed form — and, when the debilitation is cancelled, as giving them with unusual force.

Neecha bhanga — the cancellation. Several conditions cancel a debilitation; the one operating this autumn is the presence, in the debilitation sign, of the planet that is exalted there. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and is present until 31 October. Other conditions — the lord of the sign in a kendra, the planet's exaltation lord in a kendra — depend on your own chart and cannot be read from the transit alone.

Nakshatra over sign. A planet's sign gives the frame; its nakshatra gives the voice. That is why this forecast is cut into three passages rather than one: Mars under Jupiter's hand in Punarvasu, under Saturn's in Pushya, under Mercury's in Ashlesha are three different planets wearing one sign.

    → Paper C, Nakshatras

    One do, one don't

Do: use the Pushya stretch — 24 September to 17 October — for the unglamorous work: the repairs, the accounts, the conversation with a parent, the thing at the office nobody will thank you for. Mars under Saturn in the Moon's sign is built for it.

Don't: mistake a mood for a decision. Mars in Cancer produces sudden resolves — to leave, to quit, to cut someone off — that feel like clarity and are usually tide. Give any such resolve until Mars enters Leo on 12 November. If it survives that, it was yours.

    Questions we are asked

Is Mars in Cancer bad for everyone? No. It is indirect for everyone. For Virgo and Aquarius lagnas it is useful; for Cancer, Sagittarius and Capricorn it asks for care. And for every chart, Jupiter's presence until 31 October takes the edge off.

What about Mars debilitated in my birth chart? That is a different reading. Natal Mars in Cancer is a lifelong condition with its own cancellations and its own gifts — many surgeons, nurses and protectors have it. This article is about the transit only.

Which of the three passages is the hardest? Ashlesha, 17 October to 12 November — and especially its last twelve days, after Jupiter has left. If you have one difficult conversation to schedule this autumn, have it in Pushya, not Ashlesha.

Is this a good time for surgery? Mars rules surgery and the sixth house rules illness. Mars in Cancer, a watery sign, is not the classical preference for elective surgery, and for Sagittarius lagna — where Cancer is the eighth — the tradition would say wait. Emergency surgery is not a muhurta question; go.

When does Mars leave? 12 November 2026 at 20:18 IST, into Leo and into Magha, where it meets Jupiter on 16 November at 1°39′ Leo (11:53 IST, 06:23 UTC).

This reading is for guidance and education. It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it does not replace a reading of your own chart.

If Cancer holds an important house in your chart — or your Moon or lagna is there — this is a transit worth reading with the whole chart in hand. A consultation can place it for you.
