Venus does not fail by becoming ugly. It fails by becoming persuasive while the light is wrong.
The Venus retrograde of 2026 runs from 3 October to 14 November, with Venus combust — hidden in the Sun's light — from 19 to 29 October. The dates below are sidereal (Lahiri), which is why they name Libra and Virgo where a Western forecast names Scorpio. In Jyotish, asta — combustion — is the condition where a planet sits so close to the Sun that its own light is drowned. Sharing a sign with the Sun is not enough; the distance between them is what counts. Inside that distance Venus's usual gifts — attraction, agreement, taste, ease — can look present while the substance behind them thins.
That is the practical meaning of "charm lies". Not that people become dishonest overnight. The signal that usually helps you choose — liking, beauty, social smoothness — becomes noisier than the facts, and for six weeks the facts have to be checked by hand.
Venus retrograde 2026 dates — the whole path, not just the combustion
Combustion is the middle of a longer story, and the story is the retrograde. Here is the full path.
31 August — Venus enters the pre-retrograde shadow period. Venus passes 28°38′ Virgo, the degree it will return to when it turns direct. From here, Venus matters move deliberately, and commitments made in the shadow come back for review.
2 September — into Libra, its own sign. 11 September — into Swati, Rahu's mansion, the wind. Venus in its own sign but under Rahu's hand: attractive, independent, and a little unmoored.
3 October — retrograde station at 14°15′ Libra, in Swati, at about 12:43 IST (07:13 UTC). Venus stops and turns back. What was moving forward in love, money, art and agreement pauses and reverses.
19 to 29 October — combustion. Venus within eight degrees of the Sun, passing between Earth and Sun on 24 October at about 09:14 IST (03:44 UTC). The charm goes dark. 24 October — back into Chitra, Mars's mansion, a few hours before the conjunction.
6 November — back into Virgo. This is the part most forecasts miss. Virgo is Venus's debilitation sign. From 6 November, Venus is retrograde and debilitated — the least Venus-like Venus of the year.
14 November — direct station at 28°38′ Virgo, still debilitated, at about 05:59 IST (00:29 UTC). Venus turns forward.
Outside India. Venus turns retrograde on Saturday 3 October at 08:13 in London, 03:13 in New York and Toronto, and 00:13 on the Pacific coast; in Sydney it is 17:13. It turns direct on 14 November at 00:29 in London and 11:29 in Sydney — but in the Americas that is still Friday 13 November: 19:29 in New York and Toronto, 16:29 on the Pacific coast.
22 November — back into Libra. 16 December — out of the shadow (late on 15 December by UTC): Venus passes 14°15′ Libra again, the degree where it turned back. The story ends where it began, three and a half months later, and what was reviewed is either confirmed or dropped.
What to delay
Hold decisions that depend on Venus being clear: a marriage date fixed only because "it feels right"; luxury purchases made for status rather than use; brand or relationship launches that need public liking more than product truth; contracts where goodwill is doing the work the clauses should do. If the deal needs everyone to stay enchanted, wait until Venus is visible again — and for anything that matters, until it is out of Virgo on 22 November.
What still works
Quiet maintenance. Keeping promises already made. Craft without a premiere. Repairing a relationship without announcing a reinvention. Money discipline that does not need applause. Venus retrograde is a poor season for performance. It is often a usable season for honesty that needs no audience — and for returning to a person, a project or a purchase you walked away from too fast. Retrogrades give things back.

The classical rules behind the reading
Combustion. A planet within a fixed orb of the Sun is asta. The orbs differ by planet and by source; for retrograde Venus the common figure is eight degrees, for direct Venus ten. A combust planet is read as weakened in its capacity to give, though not in its capacity to signify — a combust Venus still means marriage; it means marriage that struggles to be seen.
Retrograde Venus. The tradition reads retrograde benefics as strong in effect and reversed in direction: Venus retrograde gives Venus matters back, revisits them, and asks that they be chosen again.
Debilitation. Venus's debilitation is Virgo, deepest at 27°. From 6 to 22 November Venus is there, and turns direct at 28°38′ — almost exactly on its deepest degree. Venus debilitated is Venus asked to be practical, critical and useful rather than beautiful.
How to check this in your own chart
- Find Libra and Virgo from your lagna, and again from your Moon. Two houses each; the table above tells you what they hold.
- Look at your natal Venus — its sign, house, nakshatra, and whether it is combust or retrograde at birth. A natal Venus in Taurus or Libra, or exalted in Pisces, weathers this well; one in Virgo, or within eight degrees of the natal Sun, feels the transit as a return to its own condition.
- Note whether Venus is your friend. For Taurus and Libra lagnas it is the lagna lord; for Capricorn and Aquarius it is the yogakaraka; for Aries and Scorpio it rules the seventh. Those six lagnas have a personal stake in this retrograde that the others do not.

On orbs: Panchang tables and lineages set the combustion orb for Venus slightly differently, so the boundary can shift by a day or two. The dates above use a standard table with a Lahiri ephemeris.
Questions we are asked
Can I get married during Venus retrograde? The tradition avoids it, and avoids combust Venus above all: 19 to 29 October are the days to keep clear. A date already fixed by a proper muhurta need not be moved for the retrograde alone; a date being chosen now should wait for late November.
Is it a bad time to buy gold or jewellery? For a gift or for use, no. For investment or status, the retrograde tends to bring buyer's regret; the classical preference is to buy after Venus is direct and back in Libra.
What if my natal Venus is already combust or retrograde? Then this transit returns you to your own condition, and it often lands as clarity rather than confusion. That reading needs the chart.
When is Venus completely clear? Direct on 14 November, back in Libra on 22 November, out of the shadow on 16 December. For anything that matters, 22 November is the date.
