Romance is the fifth house. Marriage is the seventh. They are not the same house, and the difference explains most of what people bring to a reading.
The most common question in any astrologer's room, after money, is some version of: will it work? The chart answers a better question than that. It says what kind of love a person is built for, what kind of partner they will actually choose, whether the two are the same thing, and — with the dasha — when.
Two houses carry the answer. Most readers only know one.
What is the 5th house in astrology?
The fifth house is putra bhava — literally the house of children — and by extension the house of everything that comes from the heart's creativity: romance, courtship, the affair, the intelligence, the arts, speculation, and the ability to enjoy oneself. It is the house of falling in love.
It is a trikona, one of the three houses of fortune, and its lord is always a friend to the chart. That is why the fifth is read as a benefic house even when it holds difficult planets: what happens here is meant to be a gift.
The fifth house shows:
- how a person loves — with the head, the body, the imagination, the will;
- what attracts them, as opposed to what is good for them;
- the romance before the marriage, and the romances outside it;
- children, and the capacity for them;
- purva punya, the merit of past lives, which the tradition reads as the reason some people are loved easily and others are not.
A strong fifth — its lord well placed, benefics in it, Venus or Jupiter aspecting — gives a person for whom love comes. A damaged fifth — its lord in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, malefics without benefic aspect — gives one for whom love is costly, late, or secret.
What is the 7th house in astrology?
The seventh house is kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse — and of every one-to-one bond: the marriage, the business partner, the open rival, the public. It is the house directly opposite the lagna, and the tradition reads it as the other: the person you meet as an equal.
It is a kendra, one of the four pillars of the chart, and also, oddly, a maraka house — a house with the power to end. The tradition is not being morbid. It is saying that the partner is the person with the most power over your life after yourself.
The seventh house shows:
- the partner's nature — through the sign, the lord, and the planets in it;
- the marriage's character — whether it is a companionship, a contest, a duty, a refuge;
- the timing of marriage, through the seventh lord's dasha and the transits to the house;
- whether there is one marriage or more;
- the public, and how the person is received by strangers.
What is my 7th house? Count seven signs from your rising sign. If Aries rises, Libra is your seventh; if Cancer rises, Capricorn. The sign tells you the flavour of partnership; its lord and where it sits tell you the rest. The Moon's seventh — seven from your Moon sign — is read alongside it for the emotional experience of the marriage, as opposed to its events.
The two houses together
Here is the reading most sites skip. The fifth is who you fall for. The seventh is who you marry. When the two houses agree — same planet ruling both, lords in mutual good relation, both strong — the person marries the one they love and the story is simple. When they disagree, the story is the one clients bring.
Fifth strong, seventh weak. Falls in love easily, often, and well; struggles to convert it into a lasting bond. The romance is the good part. Often a chart that marries late, or marries a person the fifth would never have chosen.
Fifth weak, seventh strong. Does not fall in love easily, may not expect to; marries well anyway — a partnership that grows into love rather than starting from it. The arranged marriage that works is often this chart.
Fifth and seventh lords in the sixth-and-eighth relation — placed in the sixth and eighth from each other — is the classical signature of a marriage where love and partnership pull against each other: the romance outside, the duty inside.
Fifth lord in the seventh, or seventh lord in the fifth. The two houses joined. Love leads to marriage, or marriage becomes love. One of the best exchanges in the chart for this question.
The planets that decide
Venus is the natural karaka of marriage and the significator of the spouse for a man; Jupiter is the karaka of the husband in a woman's chart. Venus's condition — sign, house, nakshatra, combust or not — colours every relationship reading regardless of which house it rules. A combust Venus, or one in the sixth or eighth, is the placement behind more "why does it never work" consultations than any other.
Mars in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth is mangal dosha — the placement the tradition warns about for marriage, because Mars in those houses brings its force to bear on the partnership. The warning is real but the exceptions are many, and a chart is never judged by Mars alone.
Saturn in the 7th house — one of the most searched placements in astrology — delays marriage, and the tradition is clear that delay is its meaning, not denial. Saturn's partner is older, more serious, arrives later, and stays. The person with Saturn in the seventh who marries at twenty-three has usually married Saturn's lesson rather than Saturn's partner.
Rahu in the seventh brings the foreign, the unconventional, the partner from outside the expected circle; Ketu there brings detachment, the partner who is spiritually present and materially absent, or the marriage that ends in withdrawal rather than conflict.
The Moon — where the heart actually lives — is read beside all of this. A Moon in the seventh, or aspected by Venus, is a person for whom partnership is emotional necessity; a Moon with Saturn, one for whom it is a discipline.
Your chart's relationships, read. A marriage report reads your fifth and seventh houses and their lords, Venus and Jupiter, the Moon's seventh, the navamsa, and the dasha — and tells you what kind of partner the chart chooses, what kind it is built to keep, and the periods in which marriage is timed.
The navamsa
No marriage reading stops at the birth chart. The navamsa — the ninth divisional chart — is the tradition's chart of marriage, and a planet's position there refines everything the birth chart said. A seventh lord that is strong in the birth chart and debilitated in the navamsa promises a marriage that begins well and thins; the reverse promises one that begins poorly and deepens. The navamsa lagna and its lord, and Venus's navamsa position, are the three things to look at.
Timing
Marriage comes in the dasha of a planet connected to the seventh: its lord, a planet in it, a planet aspecting it, or Venus. The antardasha narrows the year; the transit of Jupiter to the seventh, or to its lord, or to the natal Venus, gives the trigger — the classical double transit, Jupiter and Saturn both touching the house, is the strongest signal the tradition has. A reading that says "you will marry in your Venus period" without checking whether Venus has anything to do with your seventh has read the planet's reputation, not your chart.
A worked example
Invented for teaching; nobody's chart.
Given. Taurus lagna. Venus, lagna lord and karaka of marriage, in Aries in the twelfth, with the Sun — combust. Mars, lord of the seventh and twelfth, in Cancer in the third, debilitated. Mercury, lord of the second and fifth, in Taurus in the first. Jupiter in Scorpio in the seventh, aspecting the lagna. Moon in Libra in the sixth.
The fifth. Its lord Mercury sits in the lagna, strong by placement, in Venus's sign: love comes to this person and comes to them as themselves — they are liked, easily and often. The fifth house itself (Virgo) is empty but its lord is well placed. A strong fifth.
The seventh. Its lord Mars is debilitated in the third; the house itself holds Jupiter, a benefic, aspecting the lagna. The house is good; its lord is not. Venus, the karaka, is combust in the twelfth — hidden, exhausted, in the house of loss and the foreign.
The reading. Someone who falls in love easily and well (fifth), whose partnerships are meant to be good (Jupiter in the seventh), but whose choosing is impaired (weak seventh lord) and whose capacity to be a partner is under strain (combust Venus in the twelfth). The classical picture is a person surrounded by love who keeps choosing the one who is unavailable — and the twelfth-house Venus adds: often from abroad, or in secret. The Moon in the sixth, with its seventh in Aries, holding the combust Venus, confirms it emotionally.
The timing. Marriage comes in a period connected to the seventh: Jupiter's dasha, or Mars's. Jupiter's sixteen years are the window in which the good seventh house delivers despite its lord. In Mars's period the debilitated lord runs the show and the marriage question is harder.
What the client asked. "Why do I always pick the wrong person?" What the chart says: you do not pick badly because you are unlucky; the fifth house gives you the choice and the seventh lord and Venus make it for you. The remedy is not a mantra. It is choosing with the fifth and checking with the seventh — and, if a wedding is being timed, waiting for Jupiter.
Questions we are asked
Which house is for love marriage — the 5th or the 7th? Both, connected. A love marriage shows as a link between the fifth and seventh lords, or the fifth lord in the seventh, with Venus involved. A fifth without a seventh is a romance; a seventh without a fifth is an arrangement.
Does Saturn in the 7th house mean no marriage? No. It means late, and it means serious. Saturn denies only when the seventh lord and Venus are also badly damaged and the navamsa agrees.
What is the 7th lord? The planet that rules the sign in your seventh house. For Aries rising it is Venus; for Taurus, Mars; for Cancer, Saturn. It is the single most important planet in a marriage reading, more than Venus.
Is a second marriage shown in the chart? Yes — through the second house (which is the eighth from the seventh, the house that follows the end of the first marriage), through multiple planets in the seventh or a dual sign there, and through the navamsa. It is a technical reading and the presence of one signal is not a verdict.

In the Astro River reading order the fourth, seventh and fifth houses are read in that sequence, and for a relationship the seventh and fifth are where the reading starts and the navamsa is where it finishes. If you want yours read together — the choosing, the partner, and the timing — that is a consultation.
